I'm aware of S. Ray, but still haven't got around to watching his Pather Panchali trilogy.
Down in HK, there are some Indian dvd shops, and I picked up Mother India (1957). Though now that I read that it's a remake of the director's 1940 film, I'd probably rather see the original.
Now that I've cleared the backlog of new films, I was thinking of delving into Indian film. I have a friend going to HK next month and hope I can get him to pick up a few Indian films for me.
(Btw, I'm not into musicals, so wasn't thinking about Bollywood extravaganzas, although could try something special).
I'm very much up for it. However, we'd have to check on the availibility of the films.
Maybe Ghulam can tell us more. |

- Louis Armstrong & His Friends
- Billie Holiday: Ultimate Collection
(it seems they are starting to package and re-issue old TV and film appearances of various jazz greats ... very cool)
Either Munich or K's&Q's going on soon. |

Mo, I was looking for help arranging my own little binge on Indian film. But if it could work as a group thing, that'd be great.
I recently watched Shadow Kill (2002) by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who is supposedly a follower of Satyajit Ray. So naturally I should go to Ray's Apu Trilogy next. But was wondering where else to branch out? Also, wondering what came before Pather Panchali? |

Ghulam may need to help here, but there is a fantastic Bengali director (living) who is the inheritor of the Ray tradition. I've seen a number of his films at festivals. They are dark and ironic. Now if I could just remember his name. |

no, there are not a whole lot of bocce enthusiasts in south carolina. however, i always stop for a while to watch a bocce or boules match in some park in rome or paris. on a skill level it eclipses bowling, coming closer to billiards.
it seems such civilised contention, so in keeping with the italian and french character: lots of seemingly furious argument and amusing insults accompanied by wild gesticulation all resolved over a couple of glasses of wine and subsequent good fellowship. |

Mo, are you thinking of Rituparno Ghosh who made Unishe April, Dahan, Bariwali, Shubho Mahurat, Chokher Bali and Raincoat?
Gromit, I do not know if Satyajit Ray made any movie before Pather Panchali. |

Nothing is listed earlier on the imdb.com. However, I'd forgotten that he worked as Ass't. Director on Renoir's "The River." |

Sorry, I was doing a sort of mental shorthand.
What I meant was I don't know about Indian movies or Indian film tradition prior to Pather Panchali in 1955.
For that matter, I don't know when Bollywood came into existence or when musicals came to dominate Indian film (assuming that's a correct statement).
Ghulam, any help on the above would be appreciated.
For Rituparno Ghosh, which of those would you recommend?
(I'll also look him up on allmovie.com).
And have you seen any films by Adoor Gopalakrishnan?
(just checked the spelling and impressed myself that I got his name right on the first try). |
