yes. you expect the worst. Instead, you get this incredibly sad and tender scene.
Then later, you get the worst, in one of the most excruciating, near-unwatchable sequences I've ever seen in a movie. But superbly done, I hasten to add. |

The ENRON trial of Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skillings begins next week. The NYT wrote yesterday that there's still some doubt that they'll be convicted because the threshold for corruption is now so high that they may just say that they broke no rules and get away with it. Appalling.
Lest we forget, ENRON is partially responsible for the election of Arnold Schwarzaneggar in California: he met with them the year before the election and they caused the phony electricity shortages that brought about the recall of Gov. Gray Davis.
If Lay and Skillings walk, I'll have no hope for any future for our country. |

Re: THE CONFORMIST.
Can anyone tell me when it'll come out on DVD?
I'd really love to know as I am really tempted to make the long drive to Albuquerque to see it if it will really be awhile.
THANKS! |

mo,
there is no release date for THE CONFORMIST on dvd. I have a copy in my shop that is a transfer from television. It looks like shit. I bought it at Kim's Video in Manhattan.
You must see THE CONFORMIST on the big screen. Vittorio Storaro's cinematography is sublime. |

I KNOW that....
As a matter of fact, I am a firm beiiever in seeing EVERY movie on the BIG SCREEN. That's why I get so mad when I see movies at our local theater! I guess I have to figure out a way to go to Albuquerque.
Sat. is my traffic school date here - remember, when I was led away in just my thong and handcuffs? |

Jury selection for the Enron case (Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling) begins Monday in Houston. Courthouse rumormongers are abuzz that the judge made a mistake in not granting change of venue. They've got 150 potential jurors lined up, and only 11 of those indicated on their juror questionnaires they haven't kept up with the Enron scandal. It ain't gonna be pretty.
In addition to Tire's reasoning about Lay and Skilling getting off because of corruption blues, I also believe the case is so complicated that the average juror won't understand the nuances. Of course, that may work in the prosecution's favor. It'll be interesting to see how it unfolds. |

| In the UK, corporate fraud trials are notorious for their length, cost and complexity. They usually end with the jury being dismissed for the sake of their own sanity, with those left standing unable to countenance a retrial. |

| Yeah, but at least your trials are fun to watch, with the powdered wigs and waistcoats and whatnot. |

Much though I find it difficult to say anything likely to put off a semi-naked Zhang Ziyi, but the American system is not without its own sense of theatre.
British barristers are denied the access to the stage afforded by the area directly in front of the judge - so don't get to walk around or engage in direct appeals to the jury. And they get told off if they overdo the objections. |

| Years ago I did a lot of criminal trial work, and I always liked a judge who would not allow counsel to "traverse the well", ie, strut back and forth in front of the jury box, or lean on the half-wall. Also, in Movieland, it's common to see the lawyer come within kissing range of the witness. Not in real life. Not ever. |

The judges I've worked with go apoplectic if attorneys step away from the microphone, even for a second. So that "traversing the well" syndrome doesn't happen here, either.
I was just teasing, Jeremy. I adore bewigged men. |

I haven't seen Enron yet. But I would recommend The Corporation to anyone who wants to really get educated about the subject. (A Canadian made this doc.)
Billy Drago's scene was very powerful in Mysterious Skin. Very memorable.
Mo.........I'll meet you in Albuquerque. Bertolucci is one of my favorites. Isn't it out on VHS? I thought I saw it once in that format.
Bart.........My son sucked his thumb 'til he was 10. He was a football player. His father sucked to age 15. He was a hockey player. The grandchildren do not suck. Gateway@#$! |

| THE CONFORMIST was available on VHS. It was dubbed and pan and scan. A travesty. |

| The Turkish-German film Head-On (2004) is about a couple of Turkish immigrants in Germany, both lost souls, who succeed in saving each other but are denied a happy outome. It is a touching story, well directed and with very good performances. An excellent movie. |
