I decided to watch 2046 anyway, without seeing In the Mood for Love. I can understand the differing reactions. It's a very sad movie about the ways love can fail, very lyrical and complicated. I didn't think it all worked, but it's beautifully made with fine performances, including one by Zhang Ziyi that shows how good she can be if she's not playing a Japanese woman speaking English, and a great performance by Faye Wong as a woman he could have loved if only she hadn't been madly in love with someone else. For some reason Li Gong gets second billing even though she's not in the movie that much. Very nice music and cinematography. It probably would repay a second viewing. |

I was bored out of my fucking skull by In the Mood for Love. It was paced like Antonioni on Quaaludes. |

MOOD is a mood piece. Either you succumb or you don't. |

Kar Wai Wong is IMHO all style and no substance. |

I disagree, there is hella substance to Happy Together and Chunking Express.
Saw Junebug tonight. I loved it. Aside from all of the aforementioned scenes, one of my favorites was during the baby shower, the meerkat show came on and he was bustling around trying to tape the show for her. So sweet. |

I watched Kontroll this past weekend. Enjoyed it - Will probably make my Foreign film Blanche list. It has it all suspense, drama and comedy, an attractive, interesting lead, quirky supporting characters. The Premise is: There is this group of people who work the subways - as sort of inspectors/guards - making sure everyone has purchased a ticket or pass and isn't riding illegally - they are of course feared and despised by the commuters and more than a few of them are seriously loopy and power-crazy - but really they are these poor, loser-types (some more lovable then others) who hang out, passing time. The suspense part of the film has to do with the higher-ups getting upset about the increase in train jumpers-supposed suicides . I don't want to give away everything - but it was an interesting, entertaining little film |

I saw another three films
JuneBug
This one grew on me - at first the Adams's character really irked me - way too familiar, too too talkative - your nightmare family member - although her friendliness and kindness to her new sister-in-law made her more endearing. Adam's character's husband was also unlikeable - in his constant tantrums - the movie picked up and saved itself considerably near to and the at the end of the film - having interesting things to say about how appearances can be deceiving and how a person really shows a loved one that they care etc etc
Asylum
was hysterically bad - could qualify for Exploitation film status actually - Natasha Richardson plays this frustrated, emotionally unstable wife of a psychatric administrator/doctor at (an asylum) in the 1950s - who develops (rather quickly) an attraction to a patient tending her garden - use your imagination for the rest. Most hilariously, when the two co-mingle the director changed the score to this certain tune - and repeated it everytime he cut to them making it - sometimes cut back to it several times in a matter of minutes - really it was just so obvious and funny - it almost made the film really entertaining and campy - almost
Last Days
Sorry Ehle - I wasn't floored by any of this - way way too short on dialogue (Pitt basically mumbles unintelligibly throughout the film - I mean we know he's falling apart but...god this was like watching paint dry) and not any background, narration regarding the character's story - I mean he did change the characters name from Cobain to Blake - even though its very loosely based on Cobain's life - if it is a fictional film - there should be some character development , story development |

Trish, there was alot of Junebugging going on in Current Film a few days ago. The movie hasn't sat well with me. Lots of exaggerated Southern stereotypes, and exaggerated actions. Noone capable of making a simple compromise. Noone aware of how their behavior effects others. Mostly I fault the script-writing. |

I wanted to nominate the always brilliant Celia Weston over Amy Adams for Blanche, but knew it would have been a throwaway. While Amy Adams was excellent, the more difficult character was that of the Mother and Weston pulls it off splendidly. |

I know what your saying - although i think this does really occur in families - people fall into these very static-roles - behaviors are sort of tolerated or perhaps members become indifferent |
