It occured to me yesterday that Revenge of the Sith actually, sadly represnted the closing of a pop culture circle: the first Star Wars finally pulled the perenially fringe-beloved, previously scrappily produced film sci-fi genre into the dead centre of the mainstream market. Revenge of the Sith sees it full circle: it has gone back to its original geek-only status. The Matrix films did crete a new generation sci-fi film audience, but betrayed them by proving bankrupt for ideas after only one movie. And frankly I hate TV sci-fi. It always looks and feel ridiculous and imitative - could anyone actually tell the difference between Babylon 5, Star Trek: Voyager, and Farscape?all the guys in lizard make-up look like all the other guys in lizard make-up. |

I think the Dr. Who people would disagree with that. |

I am (or once was) one of the Dr Who people (memoirs of a geek chilhood here, people!). I didn't mention it because it, and a couple of other ones tat escaped the mould - Nigel Kneale's seminal Quatermass serials, the BBC versions of Wyndham's Chocky and Day of the Triffids - are some time ago now (the contemporary Dr Who I'm still not sure of). The X-Files was a vital exception for its first 2-3 seasons, with its very carefully cultivated noir-ish look and in-depth characters, but it spent itself by breaking from its core story too often and going on far too long. |

You should read Roger Ebert's write-up in his Great Movies series this week. It's about Dark City, a really great scifi film, in which he says Dark City explored all of the themes of The Matrix, did it sooner, and did it better. |

I hated Dark City. Gibberish story-telling. It was more original than The Matrix, but not much - I'd seen most of the shtick of both films, yes, in old Dr Who episodes, except without the slick-assed cinematography.
Rod sleep now. Bye bye. |

In answer to you question, we have the rerelease version with all deleated scenes put back in tastefully and new music added to make up for changes as well as new footage to connect. It is actually considered a whole new movie by buffs what with just the addition of 2+hours of smooth-out footage.
I used to go to Who-Cons, dressed as can you guess? |

Rod:
I have no problem with corn. And if the entire movie was corn, that would be awesome.
The problem is that Episode III was supposed to be the "dark" movie, and the showdown was truly a terrific, and horrific moment - particularly Anakin's "I HATE YOU." It was stunning, and I remember saying to myself, "Holy shit! If the whole movie was like this it would have been fucking awesome."
But Lucas surrounds the whole movie with pure shit, and I am at the brink of exhaustion from hearing from his defenders about how the Star Wars movies are supposed to be corny, because what they really are is just plain shitty, and I get tired of the passive aggressive defense that if I don't appreciate shit, I'm just a fun-hating codger who either a) doesn't appreciate camp, or b) has snobby expectations of a kid's movie.
Bullshit. It's shitty, because Lucas is a shitty director and an even shittier writer.
"I think the Dr. Who people would disagree with that."
I sincerely hope there are not actual "Dr. Who people."
"Thanks, nerd, get yourself some." |

I haven't gone out of my way to see recent Star Wars (and, in fact, I haven't seen any since #6 / whatever), but corn definitely WASN'T what the original movies were about. |

Exactly.
A shitty script, shitty direction and shitty writing doesn't add up to camp or corn. It adds up to shitty. |

While having my coffee this morning I tuned into TCM. I missed the first few minutes of the film, but it was with Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman and I figured it was Magnificent Obsession. It turned out that it was All That Heaven Allows. This was a mind stunningly stupid movie. Everything from the plot to the dialogue to the message to the musical background to the dilema of the hero and heroine; It was such a silly, artificial, poorly acted, technicolor piece of juvenile fluff that it's unbelievable that anyone over the age of 3 could take it seriously. I didn't, and I loved it. I was laughing throughout. What a good time I had. This movie epitomizes, 'hilariously bad'. A must see. |
