"Bush?"

"Yeah, Bush."

"What does Bush have to do with...?"

"The Thing?"

"Yeah, The Thing."

Saw the 2003 documentary The Weather Underground, the militant anti-Viet Nam war group which broke off from the Students for Democratic Society in 1969. These were some very bright and commited young people who believed in violent action and wanted "to bring the war home". They blew up several buildings, were pursued by the FBI and eventually realised that their movement had no future and were either arrested or turned themselves in. Many spent long terms in prison.

The movie is interesting, informative but not engrossing. Awareness that we now are again at war, and have someone in the White House far worse than Nixon, gives rise to feelings of hopelessness and despair.

We finally rented The Fog of War.

This is a real tragedy. There has never been any doubt that McNamara is a brilliant man, but he seemed unable or unwilling to grasp the relationship between his actions and those who were tried at Nuremburg.

Nor was he willing or able to discuss the impact of his decisions and actions on his family. How can you say your actions took a toll on your family and their health, and may have even been responsible for the death of your wife, and then follow up that remark by observing that, over all, it was "good" for them?

The additional scenes on the DVD were very illuminating, too. Again, this is not a stupid man, but there was a major disconnect between his ability to perceive we should not get involved in Viet Nam and his sense of duty to a president who thought we should.

On balance, the experience helped me and my husband to better understand exactly why we hold him in such low regard.

I'm sorry if I'm discussing something long past its due date, but I don't know how to search these here fora to find previously posted opinions from other viewers without paging through fifty-some pages! Confused
