Harimau Mati meninggalkan belang, manusia mati meninggalkan nama - Tigers die and leave their stripes, but humans die leaving their names

Out of the mouth of the tiger into the mouth of the crocodile (or out of the frying pan into the fire) |

When I was in Hong Kong, one of our chainman came across a snake. He immediately set to it with a machete in an effort to consume its all but still beating heart. It was something to do with capturing something of the snakes vitality.
Have you ever wondered why you never see a cat in the Far East without a broken or missing tail? |

Cats with stumpy broken tails! Explain that to me-- I remember all the cats in Kyoto had stumpy crooked tails. I still don't know what that's about.... |

Quote: You'd be surprised at what goes on here. Even in Shanghai.
I was eating a bowl of noodles one time in a small restaurant, when a guy just drove his motorcycle slowly right through the joint. There was only one aisle and his machine barely fit. Right out the back door. Noone batted an eye.
Here in Pagosa, a bear walked into the town drugstore. Strolled up and down the aisles and left via the back door. I think a few eyelashes were batted. |

Cats' tails have a vitality and seemingly a life of their own, it is a common superstition in the Far East that a person who breaks a cats tail will gain some of this life essence. |

Marc, that eye witness account was incredible. When I was having an argument with someone who asked me to name one good thing that the liberals had ever done for America and I started with the freeing of the slaves and civil rights laws, we veered into the Civil War. He said at one point that there was racism in the north also. I said the difference was that in the south it was institutionalize. It seems after reading that account, that it still is. |

I don't know how many more of these hurricane reports I can take. I may have to turn off the news for a while, especially if stories like this turn out to be accurate:
Word is that FEMA is trying to keep journalists across the city from photographing victims and conditions. They say it's out of respect for the families, but I suspect they just don't want the truth to get out. |

absolutely true, but as institutionalised in the north (now) as in the south...
with the mass migrations of southern blacks to northern urban areas particularly after WWI, previous minorities who had gained a tenuous foothold in the new country (the steady influx of irish from the 1840's and the italians and eastern european jews of the mass immigration of the 1880's) began to feel an economic threat.
as migration began to match immigration , competition for low end labor of either variety became intense as did an astounding subtext for bigotry based on a sliding scale descending from national origin to creed and, finally, to race. this was purely a northern phenomenon and its carryover is still in place today.
i'm no apologist for the south, but like the blame for the tragedy in new orleans needs to be apportioned fairly and honestly. |

The Chinese press seems to print a lot of wild stories. I'm skeptical as to their authenticity
In the last few days we've been eating some yak meat...also water buffalo, which is really tasty as long as it's marinated. Don't know what the marinating sauce was, however! |

At one point we were served duck on a platter. No duck feet, a delicacy...BUT I really couldn't handle the duck head with its eyes staring up at me. |

I REALLY don't want to think about that. |

Well, they were going to relocate 3000 people to a church camp in Oklahoma, but that's been put on hold. Seems the people didn't want to go so far from home. I can understand that. There seems to be a tendency to think that these people can just be moved around at will, like game pieces. I can see the problem of finding housing and facilities for them, but a little consideration goes a long way. |
