Marc-san;
Beware, Sex Is Comedy (or is it As?) the Breillat film about making Fat Girl; Anatomy of Hell, released near-simultaneous in the US, is about a suicidal woman and a gay man investigating misogyn, probably closer thus in spirit to Romance than Fat Girl.
Speaking of which, I've got Romance on tape, I ought get mass round to watching it. |

There are certain films that I cut some slack because I admire their vision, creative balls, recklessness, even though they fall short of total greatness, they're brilliantly fucked up, they take chances and veer into trancendent moments of masterful lunacy and brain-addled poetry. SIN CITY is one of those films. I wish it had been better, but it was a wild enough ride that I dug it despite its flaws. Other films that fall into the " brilliantly fucked up" category include:
BLADE RUNNER, EL TOPO, FIGHT CLUB, 2001, BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF,
THE THIN RED LINE, 1941, ONE FROM THE HEART, GANGS OF NEW YORK, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS, PENNIES FROM HEAVEN, RUMBLEFISH, EYES WIDE SHUT, LOST HIGHWAY, THE LAST MOVIE,
SATYRICON, DONNIE DARKO, BANZAI BUCKAROO, SHOWGIRLS, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE, ... there are more.
These films were often greeted with negative criticism upon their release and went on to become cult hits. |

In a long essay on the decline and death on the Western I wrote last year I'll probably get around to posting in Film Reviews sometime, I made an special point of celebrating three maligned, butchered, brilliant films; [i]Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, The Missouri Breaks, Heaven's Gate. |

It's really kind of disconcerting to me that there are films like this that get displaced in a film society while a whiny 40-something man who still steals from his Mother movie gets pages of discussion sort of sickens me.
Get over it. There's room for everybody. |

ehle--Honestly, it strikes me as anti-constructive to disparage other people's passions in that way in a forum devoted to differing opinions. I'm not nuts about Closer and I didn't even like Iris but I never called your long-term espousal of them "sickening." I may very well see Fat Girl (A Ma Soeur) at some point, and I may like it or not, but that will not change my attitude toward Sideways despite your gratuitous and mean-spirited slam. (And lest you think I'm taking this personally, I am standing up for chilly and marj and marantz and other Sideways fans too.) |

No matter how you or others take my comment. I meant it and have every right to post it. I'm pretty much with you where all discussion of film is good. But to bring up Iris?? I mean, that was the OTHER place and while I reviewed it, I didn't go on endlessly, repeating myself ad infinitum. Closer is a more appropriate film for your argument here, but I bet if you go back and count my Closer posts and your Sideways posts, you'd win by a landslide. So you get over it. |

I am asssuming you watched the CRITERION edition of FAT GIRL. If so, check out the extras, including the interview with Breillat. She's a fascinating woman.
I hated Breillat's ROMANCE. Its a sex film for people who hate sex. But, after viewing FAT GIRL, I've decided to give ROMANCE another shot.
Breillat recently made a film called ANATOMY OF HELL. Its a semi-autobiographical film about a woman directing a film like FAT GIRL.
Don't forget her poignant film BRIEF CROSSING which is an excellent film about a 1 night May/December encounter - with NO VIOLENCE. |

Happy to see that you mention BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF (which I loved) and another big fave, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS (I played the soundtrack for weeks). |

This quote (not Billy's) had me ROTFWL. I haven't seen anybody go about summing up this movie in quite that way.

After reading many comments on the imdb.com last night about FAT GIRL, I came across one that says that Breillat actually prefers the title FAT GIRL and refers to the film as such.
[NOT as "A Ma Soeur."]
Marc, was this the case with the Breillat interview on the DVD?
IMO the title "A Ma Soeur" (literally "To My Sister") is much less gutsy and provoking than FAT GIRL. |

These films sound very interesting in light of FAT GIRL. Breillat's exploration of sex themes is controversial and unconventional.
I've been reading more about her films at the imdb.com and was surprised that "Anatomy of Hell" won the Jury Best Film prize at the Philadelphia Film Festival. |

A comment to those of you who have never seen a Breillat film : the sex is raw and explicit and not sexy. The emotions are raw and explicit and not sexy. Be aware of this when you watch her films. They can be very disturbing (or boring) - she dissects feelings and actions in a very clinical, detached way.

I found SIDEWAYS to be a pleasant diversion... --Marc, the other day.
SIDEWAYS was so bad it made my penis bleed.--Marc, today.
