Private Joker wrote: ...the list goes on -- all actors doing such strong work in fascinating roles. And of all the movies in 2004, you thought Alan Alda's stench-filling hack job was one of the three best? That will perplex me until at least... April or something.
Wow... you do have a point , joker, about the actors you listed being of more talent than Alda, but at the same time, I did feel his performance was actually really good. It wasn't the drone and battered tounge that I was watching... it was the way he presented himself in discussion with Leo's character and Alec Baldwin's character that made you hate him. Like an enemy that you wanted to lose in whatever he did.
FWIW, I think Alan Alda is horrible in comedy. He was the worst part of M*A*S*H and he's been in some pretty bad movies over the years playing really stupid roles (Betsy's Wedding comes to mind). Overall, I distate most of his work. But there was something about his protrayal of the evil senator that got me.
If I would have seen Closer, I would have most likely picked Clive Owen, but since I didn't, I can't judge someone for who's performance I've not seen. Having recently (last night) seen Sideways, I was able to pick Thomas Haden Church and thought his performance was excellent and very enjoyable.
Sorry to have you perplxed for the next 3 months, but that's my opinion of the movies I've seen and who I thought should be included in my best 3 performances for Best Supporting Actor.
If it helps relieve some of the perplexing, I would have named Jude Law instead of Alan Alda if he would have had more screen time. As it was, his awesome performance was more of a cameo, something lasting just a bit longer than most men's orgasms. But none the less, great.
As for Alec Baldwin's character, he just wasn't convicing enough for me to consider him at all. I like him, and I enjoyed him playing Juan, but at the same time, it was too forgettable.

Whom was she supporting? Howard was the lead actress in THE VILLAGE. |

Actually, to be nit picky, Robin Wright Penn was the lead in A Home at the End of the World.
Don't worry censored... we are not all ganging up on you...

I consider The Village a total ensemble of actors. I didn't find Howard's role to be a female lead role in the traditional sense at all. Thus my Supporting Actress vote. What was the higher billed Sigourney Weaver considered..I will agree Howard stole the show.
If there is a consensus here that Howard's role was a lead then my other vote is for another actor from Baadasssss! The excellent Joy Bryant.
Chilly you are right I was thinking of Best Actress with Wright Penn's role in A Home at the End of the World
I will add Cloris Leachman in Spanglish for my third Supporting Actress.
What a start! Sorry 'bout that folks. |

Man! After all the bitching you did at Chilly this is a pretty far-fetched stretch...did the guy pay you off or something? Or maybe just an Academy Award like nod to his lifetime achievements ? |

With the ensemble pieces like The Village, Closer, et al, it's always a bit tricky sorting out who, if anyone, was the lead.
When I started reading this thread and saw Virginia Madsen's name put forth a handful of times for Supporting Actress in Sideways, I disagreed with it at first blush because I thought of her as the lead actress. But after some reflection, I realized that Paul Giamatti was the lead overall performer in the film while the other three performances, regardless of gender, supported his. |

I've defended Grant's performance in that film on here several times. I refuse to do it again. Furthermore, I provided ample reason why Alda sucked. When you can find a reason why Grant is undeserving, then maybe I'll listen. |

I felt the same way about Joaquin Phoenix surrounded by the rest of the (supporting)cast in The Village I suppose I'm wrong.
Joker: I just thought you went into Chilly a little hard for his opinion of what he liked..period. As far as Hugh Grant..I don't happen to really ever find him to be what he is touted to be (the new coming of that other far more talented and charismatic Grant). I think his best performance was as a sickly Chopin in a film I don't remember the name of right now. When he is at his charming best he leaves me a little cold in his good films, but in drivel like the Bridget Jones series (where he mailed in his performance in the first film I thought) I found it a little strange to find you in his exaltation, particularly if this second performance is anything like the first. I've heard it's much worse. I suppose I'm wrong. |

I want to give my final list to the counter. I need a little help from the rest of you if you have seen The Village is Bryce Howard supporting as Madsen is or is she a clear Lead?
If she is supporting my list is:

Bryce Dallas Howard - The Village
Cloris Leachman - Spanglish
If she is the lead then my list is:
Joy Bryant - Baadasssss!
Virginia Madsen - Sideways
Cloris Leachman Spanglish |
