Well don't bother renting All Quiet On the Western Front because he didn't direct either version. Where did you get that from Lorne? |

I have definitely seen 7, probably 9, but have clear memories of only two, which IMO are among his best, High Noon and Julia. |

Lorne, please get rid of that embarrassing mention of All Quiet on the Western Front. What were you thinking of? Just kidding about my high dudgeon, but, yeah, ditch it.
Movies that we must discuss are High Noon, From Here to Eternity, The Sundowners, The Search, The Men, and The Member of the Wedding.
There are many others--The Nun's Story, A Man for All Seasons, The Day of the Jackal, Julia, Oklahoma!--which are worth talking about and watching, but are not as quintessentially Zinnemann.
I've never seen Behold a Pale Horse, btw. |

Interesting point is that Zinnemann directed both Brando and Clift in their movie debuts (The Men, The Search, respectively.) And, yeah, I know that Clift actually filmed Red River pre-"Search." |

True, From Here to Eternity got Oscars for both best direction and best picture.
He was also nominated for Oscars for: Julia, The Sundowners, High Noon and The Search.
Among actors in movies directed by him who won Oscars were Gary Cooper (High Noon), Vanessa Redgrave (Julia), Paul Scoffield (Man for all Seasons) and Frank Sinatra (From Here to Eternity) |

I rember going to see HIGH NOON as a boy and being bored to tears. I kept waiting for something to happen. Of course, thats kind of the point of the movie. |

The Day Of The Jackal is one of his best films-- very understated and very true to the book. You only have to see the mindlessly flashy remake of a few years ago to see that Zinnemann's calm and deliberate style make for a fully engrossing film-- no flash, just inspired story-telling. Hitchcock did the same thing in Topaz and failed-- too pedestrian. Zinnemann did it right. |

I saw the movie at 11 years old and was riveted. Of course, that's what happens when you are into the psychological ramifications of the story rather than waiting for the showdown.
When the showdown comes, it defies expectations in so many ways that...but that should wait for the discussion, which I'm eager for. I just finished watching the movie again and was again in its thrall. |

The Day of the Jackal was on TV just a couple of weeks ago, and I saw it then for a second time. The level of suspense, intrigue and anticipation is high throughout, in spite of the fact that we know the outcome from our knowledge of history. |
