Confession: I am facing my truth. I don’t like Shakespeare. I don’t get Shakespeare. I don’t like Shakespeare movies. I don’t know what’s wrong with me but I guess I don’t care. Funny thing. I saw MacBeth today. I was bored, impatient for it to end. The movie I saw right before was Sundown. The few people who left after were saying “What a waste of time and money. What was that about?” That’s what I would have said after MacBeth. But Sundown was my kind of movie. Very little talking. A focus on one character, Tim Roth, who is an enigma.
The 2 movies had some of the same ingredients: death and violence and family upheavals. But Sundown had a message that you had to work to uncover. And that’s the kind of work I like. |

The most important news day of the year is here! The Oscar nominations have been announced!
Kidding aside, the nominations are just as pitiful as usual, with worthy people being snubbed and unworthy ones being honored. My choice for most unworthy is Nicole Kidman, who was nominated for her embarrassingly bad imitation of "Lucy Ricardo" in "Being the Ricardos." Kidman was marginally better at acting the role of "Lucille Ball" offscreen, but her attempts at doing the Ball sitcom persona were cringeworthy, not award-worthy.
Slightly better but still not worthy of nomination was her co-star Javier Bardem. A fine actor in roles commensurate with his talent, Bardem was stuck with a more or less thankless job as
Desi Arnaz. His imitation of "Ricky" was certainly far better than Kidman's "Lucy," but Oscar time? No way.
The Best Picture list did include my three favorite films of the year: "West Side Story," "The Power of the Dog," and "Don't Look Up." So that's something. Unfortunately "House of Gucci," a wildly entertaining epic, was left off.
Meanwhile, Lady Gaga was shut out for her bravura turn in "House of Gucci."
Nicolas Cage got no love for what is arguably his career peak in "Pig." Nor did Adam Driver for either of his great performances in "Gucci" and "Annette."
There were plusses. Kristen Stewart did get a nod for "Spencer," almost a surprise after she was dismissed by the dumbass SAG nominators and the BAFTA jerks. Jesse Plemons got a nom for supporting actor in "The Power of the Dog," meaning all four lead performers were recognized. Good!
The Oscars are idiotic but I keep watching. It 's an addiction for which there seems to be no cure. |

Finally saw the vaunted Kenneth Branagh "Belfast." It's been raved about at length by most and sundry. A nice movie that doesn't pull manipulatively at one's heartstrings, but I wish it had just a little bit more. Beautifully shot, well directed, well acted, it's just not all that. And the Van Morrison songs don't fit well at all IMO. Not the masterpiece people are proclaiming, not by a long shot. But, as I said, a nice movie.
Oh, and Jude Hill, the eleven-year-old lad who plays the leading role, is amazing. |

Methinks the Bard was humorously criticizing his own business. I thought Hamlet's remarks dovetailed well with your reaction to Macbeth (which hasn't reached Stixville yet), and posted on that basis. Will report back when I've seen brother Joel's solo project. |

What Weeds said about Belfast. Nice but no cigar.
No idea what Licorice Pizza or Nightmare Alley are doing on a best pic list, they both looked skippable to me, so I did. Was I wrong to do so? Did anyone think these were standouts?
Though I didn't like Gucci as much as some, I agree some great perfs from Driver and Gaga, and it was great fun as an OTT trash-tacular where the facts are of little importance. But Leto's "Super Mario" rendition would keep it off a best list, for me. |

Agree that Leto's performance was almost unwatchable, but everything else was so enjoyable that in the long run it didn't matter to me.
And my good friend Roberto Bentivegna's screenplay was terrific. I didn't post my opinion of Leto on Facebook bc I didn't want to rain on Bentivegna's parade at all. But Jared was horrific. |
