Most movies I've disliked were because of the latter. Case in point, just watched a plotless thing called Digging for Fire, where the story is nothing beyond a couple taking a couple days apart, with various shenanigans and vignettes. I would have liked it anyway, but for its sloppy and lazy execution. A reviewer described it as "mostly it's just a toe listlessly pushing dirt around." I also felt I was supposed to applaud the ensemble of indie actors (Jake Johnson, Rosemarie DeWitt, Brie Larson, Sam Rockwell, Anna Kendrick, Orlando Bloom, Mike Birbiglia, Sam Elliot) who seemed to show up and improvise their way through. Meh. |

Prostitute films I like:
Nights of Cabiria (Fellini)
Mamma Roma (Pasolini)
Bunuel's Belle de Jour is interesting and uncomfortable.
Jeanne Dielmann
Both of those feature housewives who dabble in prostitution.
I guess I like when the prostitute either has a strong personality, or a path out, or both. And when it's their story.
I remember that George C. Scott film where he's looking for his daughter. Pretty gritty as I recall. I first saw it when I was around 15, so it was bit shocking.
(it's something like the Kris Kristopherson song Sugarman -- the Sam Baker version is best, imo).
I seem to recall some good Japanese films with prostitutes, but would have to refresh my memory a bit.

Really really disliked Leaving Las Vegas.
And Woody Allen's later films with prostitutes, Mighty Aphrodite and Deconstructing Harry are both fairly annoying.
Those 3 all seem like caricatures.

I'm sort of a Roberts fan myself (Erin Brockovich and My Best Friend's Wedding are my favorites) but I loathe and detest Pretty Woman except for Larry Miller's scene as a floorwalker. Miller is a comic genius. |

Now that I checked I really haven't seen any of her romantic comedies.
Didn't see Notting Hill, My Best Friend's Wedding or Runaway Bride. So I guess it isn't too surprising I haven't seen Pretty Woman. Maybe I should check one or more out. |
