With no restaurants, movie theaters, or travel plans to indulge in I sprung for a $20 viewing of The Hunt. I’d like to watch it again because the first viewing was so dominated by excessive gore and violence. I’d like to be able to focus on the dialogue that distinguishes the deplorable from the elites and laugh more. I think some of it was clever.....

I heard that The Hunt actually created and disseminated the virus exactly for that reason.

Late last summer, “The Hunt,” a mean little horror/satire from the clever devils at Blumhouse, looked like a culture war casualty. The movie’s fanciful premise — that a bunch of blue-state Americans were killing some of their red-state fellow citizens for sport — upset a few people who hadn’t seen it and who may have been looking for something to get upset about. Can you imagine: A liberal Hollywood blueprint for anti-conservative violence!

You can’t, because it isn’t. As a rule, movies take the side of the prey, not the predators, and American liberalism survives partly by poking fun at its own. After mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso inflamed the political atmosphere even further, Universal decided to postpone the release of “The Hunt,” a response that dovetails, oddly enough, with a plot point involving corporate reactions to politically uncomfortable “optics.” There’s also a lot in the movie about how online hysteria bleeds into reality, which makes it seem at once prescient and redundant

Now that we are all freaking out about other things, “The Hunt” can be seen for what it is: an almost-successful attempt to do for class and ideology what Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” (also a Blumhouse production) did for racism. That’s the setup, anyway, and to say much more about the twists and turns that follow would be to ruin a few surprises...

The Lighthouse was the worst movie I’ve seen in 10 years. Well.....I actually didn’t make it through the whole film. 2 men stuck in a lighthouse drinking and going insane. No. I will not let any movie drive me crazy. My companion thought it was a hoot. Men!

I can't imagine what would not be compelling and entertaining about men going insane in a lighthouse. All you need are a few simple props (spare light bulbs are essential of course), and two ghostly little girls riding trikes, a ghost bartender, some topiary shrubs that move, and a man trying to write a novel who gets stuck on the line "all work and no play... "

Teehee!

My wife expressly forbids me to even mention The Shining.

So she won't be seeing Lighthouse with me. That seems pretty clear.

I decided early on to give "The Lighthouse" a hard pass. I love Willem Dafoe and have recently gotten okay with Pattinson (through "Good Time"), but nothing about "The Lighthouse" struck me as remotely appealing.

Whew.....That’s reassuring, Billy.

And a final $20 film viewing: The Invisible Man. Could not look away from the huge helping of Elisabeth Moss. I don’t find her particularly attractive....and she wasn’t trying to be for most of the movie. It wasn’t a great movie.....but it was a distraction.....and all the new releases will have to be streamed I guess.

Bart.....I don’t think you should watch The Lighthouse as it turns a normally intelligent man into a goofball.....

I thoroughly loved "The Invisible Man." I was on the edge of my seat, biting my fingernails, name your cliche, from first frame to last. One of the more successful horror movies I can remember.

Picked up:
Marriage Story
Judy
Blinded by the Light
Richard Jewell

Cats, Honeyland and old Julia Roberts rom-coms were only available on Blu Ray.

They dug out two Julia Roberts films, Wonder and something with Fireflies in the title. Since I never heard of either, I was skeptical. Wonder seems to be about a 10 year with facial deformity, and I'm not watching such for 90 minutes. And Fireflies in the Garden, Julia Roberts and Ryan Reynolds, completed in 2008 but not released until 2011. No wonder I never heard of it. Reynolds was big back then.

Anybody see Greta Gerwig's Little Women?
I'm already tired of her films which I never liked much.

And what's the consensus on Tom hanks as Mr. Rodgers?
I figure I'll give it a go at some point.

I liked Marriage Story.....biting realism
Judy......convincing portrayal
Richard Jewell.....wow, what a miscarriage of justice fueled by bad reporting
Little Women.....so what period piece

Two minutes in, and I was bored stiff by BDitNhood...

...and that was just the trailer.

Marriage Story - terrific. Actor's showcase.

Little Women - best Gerwig to date. Layers in fantasy and plot "reality" deftly. Period sets and photography is well done. Speculates intelligently on what are loose threads in the Alcott books.

"Little Women" is not only Gerwig's best, it's one of the best of the year and certainly the best LW I've seen (not having seen the Hepburn version but all the others).

WTF is BDitNhood?????
