OMG. One of my best friends is an adman and he will be the first to state that advertising people are dumbasses. Your story certainly bears that out. |

Sorry to Bother You was fairly sloppy, but at least interesting. It reminded me of District 9.

Same impression - freshman mistakes, but funny and with something to say about capitalism. I saw influences, possibly, from "Office Space," and a resonance with (in the protagonist's interactions with Armie Hammer and the boiler room manager) "Get Out." The horse-men metaphor was well done as a way to talk about how corporate entities seek to maximize efficiency. I would rec the film on the basis of "here is a new director to keep an eye on." |

I think my problem with it is that it was overpraised. My birthday double feature last August was Sorry to Bother You plus First Reformed. Loved FR, was really disappointed in StBY. It started strong and quickly ran out of steam. But the hosannas from critics were the genuine cause of the disappointment. Too much adulation can lead to a meh result. |

Sounds interesting.
Though don't think I've liked a Claire Denis film.
They seem a little sloppy and a bit stodgy.
But I'd give it a whirl if I find it here. |

I liked Sorry to Bother You. I like it when a comedian slips into a more serious role. Melissa McCarthy and Steve Carrell.
Here’s a movie by the director of A Separation: Everybody Knows. Not as good as his others but interesting. Location.....Spain. Actors.....Javier Bardeen and Penelope Cruz. They were fun to watch. |

They weren't in StBY. Nor did the principal roles of that film strike me as too serious. I'm guessing we speak of 2 films with similar titles? |

I don't think she was talking about them being in a film together, just about them taking more serious roles. |

Whoops......I meant Can you ever Forgive Me? With MM not Steve Carrell. I’ve seen him in other serious roles. Have not seen the Sorry movie. |

Picked up High Life, 1st Reformed and Shoplifters, so should get to them soonish.
Anyone have any thoughts on:
Old Man & a Gun -- Redford bank robber/fugitive film
All I See is You -- Woman gets her sight back, and life looks different
Dark River -- Brit family farm drama
A Simple Favor -- bitchiness?
I nearly bought one of the first 3. |

(posted this on Sept 28....)
Quote: A Simple Favor is a darkly funny Mommy Noir, with the always reliably cute and quirky Anna Kendrick, and a disturbingly dark Blake Lively. It's not a great movie - it's sort of like they turned Gone Girl into a screwball comedy - but it's fun and makes clever use of the Vlogger trope (Kendrick is a single mom with a cooking/crafts vlog that seems fairly dull in a chirpy way until her new best friend mysteriously disappears). Some nice supporting moments from Jean Smart and a congenial police detective.
IIRC Syd also commented on ASF. |

I did, but I can't find out where. I had a similar reaction. |
