As for growing plants/crops with urine, the dilution ratio is variously listed as 5:1, 8:1 or 10:1. I assume this has to do with the variation in water content of urine itself -- from relatively clear liquid, to pale yellow, to fairly dark yellow (right after basketball for me). I assume that 10:1 is primarily intended for more concentrated pee, and is frequently mentioned because that is safest.
And bright yellow if you take an excess of riboflavin. And reddish purple if you eat a lot of spinach then eat beets. There's a whole rainbow of pee. |

Iñárritu Wins Top Prize at Directors Guild Awards
Alejandro G. Iñárritu took home the top prize at the Directors Guild of America awards for the second year in a row. After being honored last year for “Birdman,” Mr. Iñárritu won the outstanding directorial achievement award on Saturday for “The Revenant,” becoming the first director to win in back-to-back years.
Mr. Iñárritu beat out fellow his Oscar nominees Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”), Adam McKay (“The Big Short”) and George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), as well as Ridley Scott (“The Martian”). The win is a positive sign for Mr. Iñárritu’s Oscar chances: The winner of the guild’s feature film prize has gone on to win the best director Oscar in 12 of the past 13 years.
Alex Garland won the first-time director prize for “Ex Machina”; David Nutter won for the “Game of Thrones” episode “Mother’s Mercy”; and Chris Addison won for the “Veep” episode “Election Night.” (NYTimes) |

And bongo drummers (or other hand drummers) sometimes have pink urine, due to the drumming causing red blood cells to burst as they flow through the hand. Released hemoglobin is filtered out by the kidneys and pinks or oranges the pee.
Interesting that Damon's offscreen cause is bringing clean well water to Africa. |

I've been playing congas and djembes for twenty-four years, and I've never heard a complaint about blood in urine. But that's acoustic drumming - It's different for, say, salsa drummers, who fall into competing with the monitor.
The best protection for paresthesia (tingling), arthritis and other unknown ailments is a taping of the fingers. |

| Right, I think this phenomenon only follows extreme high-impact, fast tempo drumming that goes for a long time. It's not actual blood, just the content of RBCs that pop as they pass through the hands. I will pass a link along if I remember where I saw that. |

Hail Caesar provides no belly laughs but is consistently funny from beginning to end. I liked it more than the reviewers did, just as in the case of Burn After Reading.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR HAIL CAESAR, 2ND PARAGRAPH....
If you saw my review, you see I had a similar response. Funny, but not a comedy tour de force. I think one thing that hurt the film, for regular cinema goers, was the ENDLESS showing of the trailer for about 3 months before the premiere....some funny moments in the trailer which, after you've seen them 6 times (as we did, my wife counted), lose some of their comic punch in the actual watching of the film.
Also seemed to me that the subplot of the Communist writers could have been more developed and made more of a comedic fulcrum for the film as a whole, with a bit more followup as to their fates at the end. The Coens are terrific with schemes/conspiracies, and they should play to that strength. Instead, there's too much focus on obvious bits of character arc....like Mannix debating if he should go work for Lockheed when it's pretty obvious that he's going to say no. |

I agree. It tries to cover too many of the Hollywood tidbits. What it gains in range it loses in focus. |

Hail, Caesar was a lesser effort, IMO. Their best joke was the writer conspiracy and they just tossed it aside. Also, they should have kidnapped both Clooney and Scarjo. Clooney would play it like he did, affably going along, while Scarjo would be a giant handful for them.
That said, Josh Brolin is almost always great. He's a real star.
BTW, you guys know you spent an entire page talking about Matt Damon's poop and pee. Sorry I missed that.... |

Deadpool is very enjoyable, with the word of warning that it is very violent, and richly earns its R rating while generally tweaking the superhero genre in ways it richly deserves. It doesn't have any major villains since, well, they wouldn't survive the movie. (Dr. Doom is advised to stay well clear.) Interestingly, considering how unsucessful he's been in previous superhero movies, Ryan Reynolds is perfect here. I also love his love interest (yes, it is a love story in its offbeat way), and that there is a character whose superhero alias is Negasonic Teenage Warhead and who lives up to the name. Lots of fourth wall breaking, and unique credits showing the lack of respect Deadpool has for convention. Not too long, either, and it never drags. |

Hail, Caesar! was pretty slight, but it had its moments, like the sailor's dance that has ... overtones, the water ballet and a little gem of a scene with Josh Brolin, Scarlett Johannsen and Jonah Hill. I also liked the bit with the men rowing the boat, while one of them stands on the prow like Washington crossing the Delaware. Except I don't think Washington was carrying a lapdog under his arm. |
