I don't know why I Vitelloni isn't better known.
It's respected and such, but seems largely overshadowed by 8.5 and even La Dolce Vita, La Strada and Amarcord.
To me, it's Fellini's 2nd best film after 8 1/2.
Maybe because it's an early film and doesn't have what became known as Felliniesque moments -- except for the big party scene near the end.
Perhaps the title, or lack of an international star* keeps it down.
I'd call I Vitelloni a must-see film for any cinephile.
It really is a prototype for the Group of Drifting Buddies picture.
It's probably the most accessible Fellini film, along with Amarcord.
* Alberto Sordi was a huge star in Italy, but I don't think registers much at all in America. I Vitelloni was a significant boost to a few careers in Italy. Including Fellini's early comeback. |

I have to see I Vitelloni. Not a huge Fellini fan and my favorite is La Strada, which also lacks those "Fellini moments" that I borderline detest. |

Cant get Calves on nflix. Dang. Drinking Buddies is great - handheld indie with a terrific ensemble and naturalistic dialog, humor. Olivia Wilde, who looks to me like a cat-woman, cranks up some sort of tipsy and sensual charm to 11, and renders me incapable of any coherent response to this plotless marvel.
Nice twist on the stock phrase in the title.
I 2nd the weedman's upward thumb. |

I hate to tell you this, but you've already seen it. And I think decided it was your favorite Fellini. No, this isn't a joke. |

billyweeds wrote: Finally saw Fellini's early beauty I Vitelloni, which I first heard about while reading Pauline Kael decades ago. It's the tale of a bunch of young and aimless Italian guys who hang around their smallish town talking about how they're going to leave some day. In this way, it's somewhat Chekhovian, except there is no particular "Moscow" these 20-somethings are talking about, they just want to move out. But of course most of them don't. There are touches of the later Fellini-esque grotesquery, but largely it's in the more neo-realistic La Strada style I personally prefer. Enjoyed it immensely, though in truth I was expecting something a little edgier.

You know what? I totally believe you and was wondering even as I typed the original post whether or not I had forgotten to remember. I guess I'll have to see it again.
Does this consitute a senior cinema moment? |

Probably I Vitelloni. It's one translation of the title. |

Yeah, it's the literal meaning, slang for immature young people.
Not sure what else to say about Headhunters...seems to have a Scandian Roger Deakins aboard, the photography is so good. The premise of an art thief who has never dealt with a real sociopath, who despite being a corporate headhunter is rather innocent, who is Norsk but somehow named Roger Brown, alls adds up to one of the funnier and more original character s I've seen lately. And the paranoid take on surveillance and tracking technology is both convincing and darkly funny. Our hero is resourceful and improvises brilliantly as he eludes a relentless pursuer, and in one insanely funny gross-out scene (more Coen bros than Hitch), well, let me just call it a rite of passage. From innocence to experience. As Weed notes, there is NO need for an English lang. remake. |

Love HHs. Echoes of Fargo and Blood Simple. I saw a 2013 ep of Mythbusters that examined the unusual auto accident scenario shown in the film. So as not to spoil, I won't share their findings. |
