Not sure I trust Kenneth Turan on the sci-fi film coming out this month....

....but one can hope for a watchable B movie once in a while.

Do you have a button that can lock your speed? When I'm on the Interstate and there isn't a lot of traffic I lock my speed at 5 mph over the speed limit. When I pass the cop cars watching for speeders, they never stop me.

Isn't that called "cruise control"? Don't they use that term in the North Country?

Of course it's "cruise control" but I couldn't remember what it was called.

I have an Oldsmobile Alero. I bought it when it was a year old from a guy who had it completely done to his liking. The car has everything including big tires, leather seats, V6, 2 door, auto roof window, disc and tape player, well everything. It has 30 and more miles to a gallon (on the highway), and it's very fast. Unfortunately it had a lot of fixing over the last couple of years and cost a lot. Time to get another car. Sad This one is the favourite car I've ever had. When Oldsmobile died, the Alero went with it. Pissed me off, but it's on a lot of crossword puzzles. Laughing

Gee, I thought it was just my idea to set my cruise control 5 miles over the speed limit....... The speed limit in AZ is 75. In CA where I'm headed this week it's 70. AZ has come up with a great money making scheme....photo enforcement. One Christmas I was hurrying to a friend's house when I got flashed. Didn't know at the time......but a couple weeks later I opened the mail to find a photo of me in my car......

Thanks Betsy. My son wants to buy me a car, or give me a car. He will only go to a certain price, which certainly doesn't bother me. I'll drive down there in my Alero and get a car in Atlanta. The price in Canada is way out of line even though many of them are made in Canada.

I have nothing against the Prius. Smile

We have cameras in Winnipeg that photo speeding cars, but they give a margin of error. The speeding fine is expensive.

Bart........that little Pompous Pius......

Sorry to hear that Whiskey. How many times did you take the Safe Driving class?

(AZ fundraising never makes it to the schools. We've got next to lowest of all states spent on education.)

Frances Ha is an utter delight. Greta Gerwig takes the mumblecore style and moves it towards the mainstream. The movie reminds me of the best of early Truffaut and seems to be set in Paris (part of it actually is). Noah Baumbach keeps 'em coming. This is one of my favorite movies of 2013.

Just once.

The ticket I got for speeding in El Mirage, they returned the money. The citation disappeared like it was... I dunno, some visual affect you think you see but that disappears when you get close.

Just read it and found myself agreeing with absolutely everything you said. We really really considered bailing on the movie for the first fifteen minutes or so because Gerwig's character was so annoying. But we stuck with it--actually, we took a break and came back--and wow did things change! I wound up loving both her and the movie--almost more than any other film this year. Definitely in my top five, and this is a very good year for movies.

And, yes, the ending is amazing--funny, touching, life-affirming, et al.

I liked but didn't love Frances Ha.
In my Top 5, but I still have about a dozen films I want to see.

I've been hearing about Truffaut/French New Wave comparisons, but didn't get any of that myself. I did think it was very much a Woody Allen homage, especially the use of music and editing in the first half of the film.
Here was my review: from last month:
http://www.thirdeyefilm.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=236827#236827

And the other week, I read somewhere someone attended a screening with the director and Gerwig and they said they were going for a classic Woody Allen film of NY updated for the millennial generation. I can track that down if anyone wants, but it was a brief mention.
