Billy, you couldn't have seen the replays, (and there were many), of that play. If you did and still say that it was piddling, then you are dreaming.

A lot--and I mean a lot--of people feel the runner deliberately ran inside the base path in order to trip over Middlebrooks on purpose in order to get the call.

Also, what was Middlebrooks supposed to do--vaporize in order to get out of the way when he was making a legitimate play? The whole thing is piddling and picky and OCD and they should just let the game be played. I agree with all that mainly because GOOOO SOXXX!!!!!!
He took the direct line to the plate. Without tripping he scores easily, so why bother trying to trip. Middlebrooks, like Larry Gopnik, did not do anything wrong. And like Larry Gopnik, it is irrelevant. His attempt at the ball left him in the path of the runner. It is interference.

Your final stated reason, on the other hand, is acceptable internets reasoning. Also works in barrooms and when shooting at the tv.

When I watch sports on TV, usually football, I watch games that have a team I root for or a team that I hate and root for the other team. Often there are penalties. Some times they call a penalty on the team I'm rooting for and it doesn't look like a penalty to me. Of course I say something like, "That's no penalty." (I'm talking to myself of course.) Often, I see the replays and some times it is a penalty, so I say, "Oh yeah, it is a penalty." And on the other side, I say, "Hey, that's a penalty!" I'm usually right about that. And on my side, I don't say, "That's a penalty." I say, "We got away with that one." Smile

The old tube tvs were more fun to shoot at. Implosion, sparks, noise, and the picture vanished.

The runner does have a right to the base path. And would not deliberately trip himself. It's not that hard to be a good sport and accept a fair call. Unless you are to where you are shooting at the tv.

Terrific stuff, Marc.

I can remember exactly where I was the first time I heard "Rock 'n Roll Animal". I never forgot the transition from "Intro" into the electric version of "Sweet Jane" (I'd never heard the acoustic original). It still gives me chills.

Geez that turned out huge. Sorry. Anyone know how to shrink that down?

Cool pic, though.

Cool indeed. If the size doesn't force me to start using sideways arrows on my screen, then it's not too big.

Thanks Daffy. My Lou Reed piece went viral. It got picked up by Salon, The Guardian, Rolling Stone and more. Another piece I did on Reed's transexual lover, Rachel, has also gone viral. I'm the only journalist to write about her in some detail. She's still a mystery.

Gotta say that one of the greatest times I ever had at a ball game was in Cleveland. That was, I think, in 1985.
