I liked him too. He played a soldier in Lincoln and is in Kill Your Darlings......another highly rated film to see soon. |

He was the lead in a very interesting sci-fi indie called Chronicle which is well worth seeking out. |

That is one of the funniest things I've seen in my whole life. Again and again and again--we do not deserve this man. And I'm not talking Spielberg or Tracy Morgan, though they're both pretty awesome as well. |

Billy........I wasn't bothered by that coincidence. On the whole the film stayed away from Hollywood cliches. I was impressed with the acting of the teenage boys........and the looks of Bradley Cooper's son. I think we'll see much more of him.
I was far more impressed with the actor (Dane DeHaan) playing Ryan Gosling's son.
Same here. I was really impressed by Bradley Cooper, too. |

Just saw it, and agree that the supportings really shone bright (while Gosling just shows up, delivers the patented Gosling Gaze, and the patented Gosling monosyllables, and departs through the window). Cooper pretty much blew me away, NPI. And Dane DeHaan. And the stoner mechanic in the woods. A beautiful poem of a film, on generational karma and the hold that the past can have on us. Someone said this was turning into a stellar year for cinema....yep. |

There are beautiful acting moments by Gosling in PINES. The scene where he talks about wanting to see his infant son eat ice cream for the first time is tender and beautiful.
It's not how much you say, it's how you say it. And the Gosling gaze can speak volumes. |

Did you see Drive, Marc? He says very little, A man of few words, but he is excellent. |

Ryan Gosling has the most profoundly affecting deadpan since Buster Keaton. The results are different, but the two looks are iconic. Gosling IMO gives not only an excellent performance in Pines, but in fact the best in the whole movie. Don't underestimate the effect of star quality. |

I agree, Marc. Was just saying his perf, for me, wasn't the towering performance in this stellar film (I was joking about the "patented" stuff). He has some moving moments - as you exampled. I've rented movies where the main reason is that Gosling is in it. |

I couldn't tell if Gosling's inarticulate carnie was that good, or if this fell in the slot of "the camera really loves him." I can go with the idea that making the camera love you is a talent, but I still think the supporting roles outshine him here. Eva Mendes, Cooper, Rose Byrne and the boys flat out blew my socks off. And the chase scene was one of the best I've seen in years....none of the usual preposterous defiances of physics and physiology usually to be found at the cineplex....intense and convincing in every way.
And, opening today, "Mud" looks terrific - from Jeff Nichols, who made "Take Shelter," so how can you possibly not see this? If Mr. Clemens were still hovering around, I'm sure he would be in line for "Mud." |

Agree that Rose Byrne was amazing in Pines, largely because her part was so small and she did such affecting things with so little material. She's quite a wonderful actress. Anyone who can be as fall-down-hilarious as she is in Bridesmaids and then be as dramatically effective as she is in Pines is someone whose talent cannot be denied. |

Looks like Michael Shannon has been keeping busy - in two premieres yesterday, "Mud" and "The Iceman" (where he stars, with Winona R, as a contract killer who keeps his career a secret from his family). |

I didn't love The Place Beyond the Pines. For me it was just OK. I found the first part dragged. Could have used some editing and was a bit repetitive. As the movie went on it did get more interesting and the road scenes, chases etc. were done very well. The wrap up was nice, (sort of corny), but the last scene was very satisfying. Good use of the photo also. Touching.
I'd rate it *** or ***1/2 out of *****. I did like Trance a lot better. It really moved along and didn't drag in the least. |
