Second that! I heard an audio excerpt of "Mud" on NPR and interview with Matt McC. and got pretty excited. I was making cinnamon toast and forgot the cinnamon part, that's how worked up I was.
And MARC, I'm awaiting the return of my film companion from Borneo (or someplace of equal remoteness) to see "Pines." ASAHP. |

Bart.....see it twice!
Saw the trailer for Mud. I'll see it. What about Disconnect?
Marc.....I told a friend what you said about Pines. She loved it and told me I had to go. |

Talked about it at some length. Best movie I've seen so far this year. Wonderful. A must. |

The Place Beyond the Pines is powerful, kinetic, and memorable--and extremely well acted by all concerned, including one of my favorite character actors, Harris Yulin, as Bradley Cooper's father. Rose Byrne, so side-splitting in Bridesmaids and heroine-like in TV's Damages, shows that although there are small roles (she plays Cooper's wife) playihg one doesn't make you a small actor.
But the movie is flawed ever so slightly for me by a coincidence late in the story which screams "Screenwriter on board!" SPOILER The fact that the two sons meet up is a little too much to swallow. It could happen, but probably wouldn't. Doesn't ruin the film at all, but takes me out of the story for a few moments. |

MUD is another great American movie in what is shaping up to be a good year for indie films. |

"Mud" has a very similar premise to "Whistle Down The Wind", apart from the Jesus bit that is, |

Here's an interesting bit of type casting:
In Drive, Ryan Gosling plays a stunt driver who moonlights as an outlaw.
In The Place Beyond the Pines, Ryan Gosling plays a stunt driver who turns into an outlaw.
Weird. |

Can't wait to see Mud and At Any Price. With Disconnect, The Place Beyond the Pines, The Sapphires, and Side Effects already in place, this is a banner year. |

Good to hear -- even if I'm only familiar with Pines and Side Effects so far.
2012 was a down year for films, imo
I had very few favorites and found few unknown gems.
Did like and have recced: Zero Dark, 5 Broken Cameras, Barbara, Putin's Kiss. Might re-watch Lincoln and at least the opening of Argo. |

I saw Trance yesterday. A Danny Boyle film that is definitely a Danny Boyle movie. I liked it very much right from the opening. It's a wild ride that laps and overlaps, with changes of meaning and back and forth shots of previous scenes that aren't always quite the same. The main character has memory loss and has to see a shrink to straighten things out with some bad guys who he owes a lot of money to and want the painting they tried to steal, but that he actually stole instead but can't remember where he hid it. The shrink was Rosario Dawson and became a major figure in the film. She was quite good but not as strong as the other characters as it went along. It was quite a convoluted mystery which was tied up eventually. Bloody gore and mayhem with a puzzle of who are the worst in this bunch of gangsters, and what the hell has the shrink got to do with all this.
I wasn't crazy about the ending though.
Well worth seeing. *** 1/2 out of ***** (could have been **** if I liked the ending better). Others might like the ending though.
Plan to see The Place Beyond the Pines this week. |

Glad to hear you gave it a try, Gary. It's a very stylish film and a thinker's film.
Billy........I wasn't bothered by that coincidence. On the whole the film stayed away from Hollywood cliches. I was impressed with the acting of the teenage boys........and the looks of Bradley Cooper's son. I think we'll see much more of him. |

Yes it is a thinker's film. Non-thinkers would wonder, what the fuck is going on here? |

I was far more impressed with the actor (Dane DeHaan) playing Ryan Gosling's son. |
