| Sad. I just read something on MediaBistro this morning about his withdrawing from his reviewing duties and thanking his fans, and I thought, That sounds bad. But not surprising, after all. |

| I've been watching and reading Ebert since he and Siskel were on PBS in the mid-seventies. I have four of his movie yearbooks (the titles changed) and tapes of hundreds of his shows, with Siskel, with Roeper, or the critic of the week. I heard a day or two ago that his hip (?) break was due to bone cancer, so I knew it couldn't be long, but I wasn't expecting it to be overnight. |

I knew Roger a little more than a little. We had dinner many times together, once at my home, otherwise in restaurants. We sat on panels together and talked and shopped and went to twelve-step meetings together. He was (I hate to say "was," but what is is) one of the most charismatic, memorable, witty, fun-to-be-around people I've ever known, in addition to being almost incredibly intelligent. Narcissistic, fond of holding court, the center of his universe--all of the above, but who cares? After the cancer struck, the true depth of his nature came to the fore and all of the positive facets of his character took center stage. What a man. RIP indeed. So long, Roger. I really loved you.
When he hosted SNL with Siskel he honored me by making me and my then-wife his special guests. I'll never forget that.
There's a picture somewhere of Roger and me dancing together in the early 80s. I saw it recently but as luck would have it I can't find it today. When I do I will post it here. It remains a wonderful memory for me. |

| I liked the guy and the abundant common sense and wit he brought to bear on film. My father knew him for a while when both were starting out as journalists in Illinois, and I met him (I am told) when I was about 3. (I don't think we danced) |

| Sorry to hear about Jhabvala, who was one of the well-known people I used to encounter at a friend's East Side bookstore. A very pleasant lady, unlike some of the others. (I hid among the stacks when Rex Harrison became enraged at my friend's mention of an innocuous comment in a gossip column. My friend's favorite customer was Garbo, but I never ran into her.) |

I guess that makes three. I loved Ebert's writing, and even more so as he branched out into the blogging (though I tended to disagree with him more about movies after he got sick); he was so talented and had such a great love of film, seasoned with a wonderful sense of humor about it all.
I would have loved to have been at those dinners with billy. |

I'm terribly sad about Wade. He was a real character. He could be prickly as hell, had a wonderful sense of humor, was very smart, and had lots to say. He and I butted heads here at least once, but it was always good to see him when he stopped by K2. I wish we had gotten to talk more in person.
Has anyone heard from Lady W? She must be devastated. |
