And the male lead is Mark Duplass, who is becoming one of my faves.

He and his bro have made some good films, haven't they? SNG looks like a lot of fun and I hope it appears somewhere nearby. PL and M will earn my respect if it's not one of those films where women cluster on porch swings and talk about their issues. I'm not going to say the C-flick word, I'm trying to evolve, but....

Have heard nothing about Dark Horse, appropriately enough.

Oh god, it stars Selma Blair. I'm on the next train to Chicago.

Full disclosure: PL and M is supposed to be a pretty lame flick with a terrific performance by Fonda and a wasted Keener. I still lust to see it.

Dark Horse, by Todd Solondz, is getting some great reviews. Read the one by A.O. Scott in yesterday's NYTimes for the definition of a screaming rave.

Safety Not Guaranteed sounds wonderful.

I'm getting back into a movie groove after a couple month lull.
The Shanghai Film Fest starts in a week, so I'm plotting a course. Though usually I make it to about two shows during the measly 8 day runtime. I remember last year it rained the whole week, I only made it to The Adjustment Bureau, and a couple interesting other films were at awkward times (like 1:30 or 3:30 Pm during the week).

Early thoughts:
I might try to see Isztambul, a Hungarian film.
Or PyraMMMid, a Russian film about a real pyramid scheme that flourished in the early 90's transition to "capitalism."
There's also a half-dozen Cuban films, so might venture that way.
If any of these have decent ratings.
I, Anna sounded about the only interesting of the dozen competition films, but someone who saw it thought it was trash and embarrassing that Shanghai had it in competition. It is the kind of film that poor execution could ruin.

Best Exotic Marijuana Hotel is playing and at reasonable times too -- but I'll be able to snag a dvd of that before too long. So no theater need for that one.

More in Couch ...

Something I've wondered about, too, Marc.

Saw a current film today, though about a month old. Never heard of it. Safe. Looked it up and it stars Justin Statham. Liked every movie I've seen with Statham so I went to the discount theatre (popcorn too expensive though) and liked this Statham movie also. Full of bad guys and full of mayhem. A very good young Chinese girl as a co-star. It takes place in NYC and the city is made to look like quite a scary place. The ending scene makes me think there could be a sequel.

If you like movies with Chinese and Russian bad guys and bad cops with a pretty steady sequence of consciousless killings in many environments, you should see Safe. There are also some nice bits between Stratham and the young Chinese girl.

I give it 71/2 of 10. Wasn't bored for a second.

Well, let's see. I saw Exotic Marigold Hotel, Jeff, Who Lives at Home, The Five-Year Engagement, The Cabin in the Woods, Snow White and the Huntsman, The Deep Blue Sea, 21 Jump Street, shot two new films, am in rehearsal for a new play, just wrote and performed a show for my college reunion, spent the month of May wearing a catheter (it's gone now), and continue trying to keep my relationships intact. What do you want from me, dude?

Forgot that I also saw Damsels in Distress. Wish I had forgotten it. The year's worst in a walk. Makes me never want to see Greta Gerwig ever again. (Guess I'll be missing Lola Versus.) Also saw Darling Companion. It's literally forgettable but nowhere near as horrible as DiD.

Nothing great this year, but Jeff is really good and my fave to date. Also like The Five-Year Engagement. Jason Segel rocks.

At least one of us is. And he's probably much busier than I am, and did it while wearing a catheter. (how beautiful is that phrase, "it's gone now" ?) I could joke about how that's a plus when the movie is long, but my dad died five days after they put in a catheter, as the resulting bleed led to a cascade of breakdowns that did him in. So, joking I'm not. He told me to watch the chocolate, Nightshade family vegs, and dairy, and believe me, I'm paying heed. But the marinara sauce bottle they will have to pry from my dead fingers. Soymilk is supposed to keep the catheters away, but it also grows tits on men, so use sparingly. Isoflavones mimic estrogen. In short, this caffeinated answer is: No. And I'm waiting for them to arrive.

I don't carry a Knox-sized torch for Selma Blair, but I've got a powerful penlight in my pocket with her name on it.

bart--So sorry to hear about your father. Don't know why he was wearing the catheter, but all I know is it's not very pleasant. It came off Friday, and what a red letter day that was!

I spotted Jeff Who Dwells in the Basement last night, but I'll wait til my local shop gets it in. I like to support my local pirate vendors.

Marigold Hotel is very sweet and somewhat charming but not great. I loved some of the actors--particularly Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, and Dev Patel. Dench, a great actress, has never been this likeable on film before.

Billy.........I loved Judi Dench, too. And later I thought......she was so horrible in Notes on a Scandal.......was that the same person? I know what you are saying. One never gets enough of Bill Nighy. Sorry you've been having some medical issues.

Betsy--Thanks for the concern, but you should know that my procedure was adjudged a complete success and everything appears to be working properly, so I'm feeling pretty great.
