The notion that Madonna has handlers is quaintly old skool. She's very much an artist that has controlled her own destiny from the very beginning. She isn't handled, she does the handling. She knows what producers and deejays to work with. Always has. She's a visionary artist who has gravitated to cutting edge music people who recognize in her that certain magic ingredient that make pop stars pop stars. Anyone who doesn't think that Madonna is without talent is blinded by envy, misogyny or simply doesn't have ears. Listen to the album "Ray Of Light" and maybe you'll understand that Madonna is a musical force of the first order, beyond fashion or hype.
If you want to listen to "Ray Of Light," it's available to stream on Spotify. You do know what Spotify is don't you? Or do you still listen to music on that old transistor radio in your shirt's top pocket? |

You talkin' to me? I have had Spotify in my computer for a long time. My only question is: how do you pronounce it, like Spot the dog or rhyming with "boat"? (I've heard it both ways.)
That said, it's possible to enjoy Madonna's music and still opine that she has a very mediocre singing voice, a product of the recording studio, unlike Cyndi Lauper, a natural comparison. Lauper is a great singer; Madonna is a technical accomplishment. |

I've never seen Vibes; keep meaning to. It's time. Love Lauper in The Opportunists opposite Christopher Walken, an only okay movie but with terrific performances.
I nailed it before when I suggested Lauper as Mrs. Lovett in a new production of Sweeney Todd. She could be the best Lovett yet. Come to think of it, she's quite reminiscent of Angela Lansbury at her best. |

The new MI film has Michael Nyqvist (co-star of the Millenium trilogy) in a small role.
Still fuming at the madness of an English remake of the trilogy. I'm sure Rooney is fine, but she's got nothing on the amazing Noomi Rapace. Ditto Craig v. Nyqvist. |

| It's funny, I saw the first one again over the holiday break (so I could remember what snow looks like....winter seems to have been cancelled here) and was struck by how gripping it was on a second viewing....and how remarkable that such a cliche-ridden villain (I mean, a Nazi Jew-murdering pedophile? in most films, this would be overkill) could still freeze the blood. The film is about Swedes and Sweden, greatly benefits from a Swedish eye behind the lens, and there is no, repeat, no sense in shanghaing Americans and Canadians and Englishmen and turning them into Swedes. So, yes, fume at will. |

Check out Syl Johnson's version.
Opens with a tough harmonica sound and has a heavy drum beat. He was on the Hi label with Al Green, and for some reason Green's version was never released as a single, and Syl had a hit with the song the following year.
And if you don't know Syl Johnson, make sure to check out his protest/social consciousness songs: the outrage of Concrete Reservation; the long haunting lament ofIs It Because I'm Black?; I'm Talkin' About Freedom -- all of which pre-date his Hi recordings, I'm pretty sure.
Powerful stuff.
Not sure if people know his stuff anymore, which would be a shame. |

| I think Madonna is a more than fine artist, indeed she changed the nature of her art. All I was suggesting was that maybe she wasn't a good influence on Guy Ritchie's career. |

How do you figure? The Svensk version was perfect, with terrific ensemble acting. How do you get "far superior" to that? (there may be warts I missed....so I'm not putting this in a right/wrong frame....just curious....) |
