billyweeds - I agree Theron is amazing. But I found the Theron/Oswalt hookup ... well, trite. I felt it coming, hoped it wouldn't happen, and was at least relieved that she snuck out on him in the AM the same way she did the date early in the flick. Not that I feel Matt isn't entitled to sex, but I just don't think Mavis would have done that under any circumstances. She was only humiliated, she wasn't magically turned kind or anything. I felt the same way about the driveway meltdown; Theron was on the mark, but the writing, the the event (complete with drumroll), and the saintly wife were just a little too formula. Or maybe convenient. And I guess that is why we have horse races.

I skipped the second, but I really liked the first.

I've not seen either one yet. Am I missing something? Is it comic book story like?

It's hard to describe, and to be honest I haven't seen it since it was in the theaters. It's kinda a beauty and the beast story. It's based on a comic book, and Hellboy himself is an elaborate makeup job, but I don't know that I'd call it cartoony. The backstory occurs in WWII, and he carries that sensibility with him into the present day where the main plot occurs.

I'm intrigued now. Will add it to my Netflix queue. Much appreciate the feedback.

I watched "Hellboy" on TV because John Hurt was in it. And I was surprised to find that it was pretty good.

Well it was directed by Guillermo del Toro and he's damn good at those kind of movies. Ron Perlman was very good as the rather undisciplined and sarcastic Hellboy.

Saw The Descendants for the second time and it's even better than before. Clooney gives his best-ever performance (rivaled only by Michael Clayton) and he's directed in brilliant fashion by the genius-tinged Alexander Payne. It's a truly wonderful movie.

Incidentally, if I may be totally candid though catty, the fact that Clooney's thuddingly mediocre direction of The Ides of March is competing with Payne for the Golden Globes is another example of Hollywood at its most idiotic.

Still plan to see it. Would have gone to it rather than Hugo, but I was on a date, and I figured Hugo would be a better date movie.

That was a mistake. The Descendants would not be a bad date movie; even though it deals with mortality, it's also about love in many forms.

One of the drawbacks of Medellin is that a lot of very good, American films, either don't get here or they get here very late. The Cineplexes here e.g. are showing The Change-Up and Jack and Jill. A couple of dogs for sure. There are also animated movies I'd like to see but they are all dubbed in Spanish and no English subtitles of course. There are some non-English films that might be good but aside from French which I can understand a bit the rest would be lost on me.

There are some file-sharing servers that might have some current films, like "Bit Torrent" IIRC -- don't know if it's all that legal, but if the films are simply not available in some part of the globe, I don't see how you are really putting key grips and foley artists out on the street. I wouldn't use them here, though.

Hellboy is way more fun than you might expect.

I'd guess that if you live in Medellin, Colombia, then U.S. copyright police are WAY down there on your list of worries.

I don't like watching movies on the computer. Thanks for the info, though.
