Thanks for the cyber-shot of gingko, Gromit. That's kind of my standard joke....if I can't quite remember who does a song, I guess "Steely Dan" because I never listened to them. BTW, I note that the infamous unintelligibility of "Rocket Man" has now been captured in a tv ad.
BTW (and back to the Thread Framer's Intent), have heard that Sam Raimi is doing a remake of Day of the Triffids, for 2012 release. And I think there's a remake of Total Recall in the pipeline, as well, continuing the sad trend towards mining old ideas. |

I just saw Total Recall a couple of nights ago. Woke up around 2 AM and it was on. Definitely a top notch sci-fi thriller. "Consider that a divorce" still makes me laugh. Regardless of what people say about Schwartzenneger's acting, he is very good in these kind of movies.
I think Steely Dan stinks also. |

| TR (1.0) is perfectly cast, for sure. Ronny Cox as the villain, Sharon Stone as co-villain, and Ahnuld is in top form. Looks like the remake will move the action to Earth and only loosely follow the original's plot. The big pull, for me, is that Bryan Cranston is playing the villainous Ronny Cox role, as "Cohaagen." |

The AV Club's Top 15 of the year 2011.
Pretty good looking list, including a few I hadn't heard of -- The Interrupters doc, Margaret, and I've just started hearing about A Separation, an Iranian drama.
And I don't think Submarine has been talked about here yet ...
I saw The Arbor and mostly liked it.
Thought that was a 2010 film,but maybe released in the US in '11. The jumble of layers of people gets a little confusing, and it doesn't cohere as much as I wanted. But it does give a good sense of Andrea Dunbar's plays and life. And has a couple of impressive scenes. I might have reviewed it last year on here ...

| Not my list, which would not include Meek's Cutoff or The Future, or fail to mention Take Shelter. And where is Herzog's death row doc, Into the Abyss? For anyone outside of NY/LA, this is an obscure list, many of them simply not available in large swaths of the U.S. |

The new Mission Impossible is terrifically entertaining and exciting. See it on the biggest screen you can.
The only thing about the film that bothered me is: I saw it at an Imax theater. But only some scenes were shot in Imax so the aspect ratio changes throughout the movie. Very distracting. And to charge Imax prices when only 1/3 of the film is in Imax is a rip-off. |

Planning to see this movie asap, and that's surprising, since I not only disliked every one of the others, I disliked them intensely. This one sounds awesome and is directed by the great Brad Bird, of The Incredibles fame. He's never directed a live-action film before, but this won't be his last by a long shot. |

For NYers, Lincoln Center will premiere The Turin Horse and have a full Bela Tarr retrospective.
I'm a big Werkmeister Harmonies fan and would love to see that on a big screen. A great metaphysical, apocalyptic film taking place in a small muddy village. It's playing twice the first week of Feb. Not sure what to expect from Turin Horse, but I look forward to a Dvd. Don't think the 7.5 hour Satantango is that good, though I liked it, and it would be an event to attend (includes an one hour dinner break).

I'm debating whether to get my teenage niece a pair of tickets to Werkmeister H. It's probably the kind of film she's never seen -- and I need to decide if that's good or bad. I'd think it would at least be interesting for her, whether she hates it or not.
