Never saw this forum.
Didn't know it existed.
Maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

Science fiction (i.e. non-fantasy, non-comic book) seemed to revive somewhat in the past decade

Children of Men
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
District 9
Abre Los Ojos (and english version, Vanilla Sky)
Minority Report
Moon
Serenity
Sunshine
(...will think of more, later...)

Solaris?
Primer?
I, Robot?

I think there are more, too. But Cloverfield is not one of them. Most over-rated sci-film of the decade, IMO.

Those should be on the list, too. And maybe Equilibrium, which was an interesting repackaging of the Orwellian dystopia.

Cloverfield was garbage.

I started making a list, got about 15 contenders and then ... discovered that I made a Top 50 list last year, with those same 15 in the Top 20.

I put down the whole list, as I think 20 - 30 looked more interesting than some of the standard stuff up higher.

1. Memento
2. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
3. Werckmeister Harmonies
4. I Heart Huckabees
5. Triplets of Belleville
6. Machinist, The
7. Little Children
8. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days
9. Saddest Music in the World, The
10. Capturing the Friedmans

11. Juno
12. Brand Upon the Brain!
13. High Fidelity
14. Mary and Max
15. My Winnipeg
16. Tracey Fragments, The
17. When The Levees Broke
18. Paper Will Be Blue, The
19. Sita Sings the Blues
20. Moolade

21. Kontroll (2003)
22. Royal Tenenbaums, The
23. Shadow Kill
24. Believer, The
25. Facing Ali
26. Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary
27. Three Monkeys (Üç Maymun)
28. Blind Shaft
29. Donnie Darko
30. American Splendor

31. Gleaners and I, The
32. 2 Days in Paris
33. Lives of Others, The
34. Good Bye Lenin!
35. Sicko
36. Wasp (Andrea Arnold short film)
37. Persepolis
38. Grizzly Man
39. Spellbound
40. Fast Food Nation

41. Thank You for Smoking
42. Sideways
43. Boy A
44. Amelie
45. Virgin Suicides, The
46. Peter & the Wolf
47. Little Otik

gromit--Some day maybe you'll tell me why you heart I Heart Huckabees, which resides on my worst movie list of any decade.

Almost certain we've had this dance at least before.
Wahlberg was great. (As you agreed). I really liked the Tomlin-Hoffman team and their existential detective thang. (Which you disliked though you usually love both). Schwartzman's annoyingness was used well. And the rest of it was solid.

It's an odd film, full of ideas, which takes a lot of chances. For me, they worked and I liked the loose structure.

I know I said this before, but I went into the film not expecting much -- thought the title was stupid and was annoyed by internet ads. But it charmed me. Think I've watched it three times. It rocks.

I think it was actually a pas de troi, because I'm sure I commented also. For me the only scene I liked was the one at the dinner table. Pretty well everything else had me squirming.

Saw about 20 minutes of IHH on cable at someone's house and found myself squirming. That's not an indictment, but I've never been moved to try again, from the start. I think the library here has a copy, so maybe I'll have a look. It's a movie I WANT to like, having had a longtime interest in philosophy and the Big Questions and such.
