My friend Mary sent me a draft of an email she had penned to the members of her Bible study group, explaining why she was unhappy with the group and why she was leaving, never to return. It was several paragraphs long, and I responded, "Too wordy -- can you reduce it to one paragraph?"

She wrote back: "Fuck you. God Bless."

Perfect.

So our site claims. 500 and so might be registered but certainly aren't users. Our newest registered (user?) is an online pill pushing company.

Couldn't we get some female (or male if some members prefer that) porn star organizations to register? They would probably be worth their avatars alone.

Hey, marantz -

Did you have a cousin named Hirsh (nicknamed "Vel") from Gilbert Plains? Moved to Brooklyn when he was 15?

Yes!!!! A first cousin. How do you know him? Last I heard, he lived in California. His sisters Beverly, Geraldine and Mira live in NY. Actually his full nickname was Velvel (Yiddish nickname), my brother Bill also has that nickname.

Funny thing, I never knew his name was Hirsh. Gilbert Plains is in Manitoba if you didn't know.

Yes, Take Shelter is on the list. I better go see it before it disappears under a deluge of muppets and chipmunks and horses and whatever that thing is Scorsese just directed.

Hugo was the film Scorsese just released.

Thanks for exploding the vodka myth. It tastes like rubbing alcohol, too, IMO.

If it tastes like rubbing alcohol, you might try switching brands. Certain brands like Absolut and Smirnoff leave a rubbing alcohol taste, whereas the Finlandia, Pinnacle and Skkye brands are not so over the counter tasting.

Of course, there are flavored vodkas that are actually getting quite popular with the shooting and on the rocks crowd.

Thanks to Grace's private message reminder, added to the email I got from Mia.net yesterday, and it's time to collect the dues.

The total bill is the same as it was last year. $108 (thanks to much back and forth negotiation last year). Divided by 12 people, that makes it a suggested $9 for each person. You can send more or less - it's up to you. Any extra goes towards the $40 annual domain name registration that happens in June.

Here's the details for sending payment:

PayPal: use the email address marty@chillywilly.org

Snail mail via USPS:
Marty Mankins
5433 S 1300 West
Salt Lake City, UT 84123

As always, any contribution is very much appreciated. Thanks to all who contributed last year.

Any questions, just ask here or via PM.

Funny thing, I never knew his name was Hirsh. Gilbert Plains is in Manitoba if you didn't know.

I've worked with his son Dave for a few years now. Of course I'd noticed you had the same last name, but it didn't remotely occur to me that this young bartender in Manhattan might be related to a crusty old fart from Manitoba.

Anyway, recently I saw him for the first time in a month or so and I accidentally called him Gary. After I explained, he told me his family had originally come from Winnipeg and that anyone from that area with that name had to be related. He went home and checked with his dad and, sure enough...

BTW, he also mentioned that no one ever called his dad Hirsh. He said even his dad didn't know Vel was actually from his middle name until he saw it on his birth certificate when he got older. Dave didn't say anything about California. He's quite New York/Brooklyn (even works the Mets games at Citi Field Mr. Green ).

I saw Dave last night. He says his dad wants your phone number. You can PM it to me, if you'd like, and I'll make sure he gets it. and if you send me a copy of that shot of you posing with those two scantily-clad gals I'll pass that along, too.

Time to create a new Pay Pal password (I can never remember it from year to year).

I have to admit that, since I don't like vodka, I haven't really tasted all that many. I do know that there is a brand from Norway called Christiania that is very smooth and has no medicinal flavor at all. If I were to drink vodka, that is one I would go for (though I don't know how much it costs).

As I said, I'm not a vodka fan, but I do find that the best flavored ones are made by soaking fruit in the liquor on site in the bar or restaurant. In my view, most of the commercial flavored vodkas taste like bat piss if you drink them on their own; I just can't stomach Absolut Kurant or any of the espresso flavored or root beer vodkas and the like. Having said that, Absolut Mandarin is pretty good. And a few of them do pretty well if you mix them. Stoly Raz and champagne is nice, and Stoly Orange shaken with OJ and a touch of triple sec is quite refreshing. That second one is known as a Holly Special, after the bartender at Matts Grill on 8th Ave, & 55th St. (preemptive strike: There's no apostrophe in Matts, billy).

Most are astonishingly over-priced, considering how little it takes to actually produce them. However, demand has driven the prices through the roof, in spite of an incredibly competitive market. My brother is in the beverage business, and the liquor distributors tell him that a couple of years ago there were ten new vodkas coming out each month. That's how profitable vodka is.

The deadline is approaching for SAG nominations and I have several movies to see in order to make my selections. I'm not making a huuuuge effort to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo before the due date since I'm practically dead certain I won't be nominating anyone. (I may be wrong, but check with me later after I've seen it; I won't lie if I think I screwed up.) This week I will see The Artist, Hugo, Melancholia, The Iron Lady, and (just 'cause I wanna) We Bought a Zoo. The first fifteen minutes of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and the resulting snooze it brought about reminded me of why I dislike John le Carre's work. Talk, talk, talk with a lot of multi-syllable names and code numbers. I even disliked Alec Guinness back in the day in the role of George Smiley, and Guinness is arguably my favorite actor ever. Haven't finished watching the very effective Warrior as yet, but I can tell there are no noms within.

Meanwhile, SAG is not allowing me to nominate Ezra Miller, a brilliant young actor who knocks it out of the park in Another Happy Day and hits a solid double in We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Gonna call SAG on Monday and clarify this situation. Damn!!!
