Fox Searchlight is pushing it for Oscar nominations. As a member of the SAG Nominating Committee, I've been invited to a screening. Should I decline?
It's directed by Steve McQueen, btw. You make it sound like it might as well have been directed by the other Steve McQueen--the one who's dead. |

As a fan of the real Steve McQueen, I'm not wild about the director of "Shame," generally. He should put his middle name (Rodney) in there, when he works professionally.
(much as Michael Douglas didn't assume he was THE Michael Douglas, and showed some respect by changing his name to....
....Michael Keaton)
I'd see "Jeff" just for the cast. I heart Sarandon, and also Judy Greer, a terrific comedic actress. |

Just to be fair to the fake Steve McQueen, Variety strongly disagrees with the real Marc.
"Few filmmakers have plumbed the soul-churning depths of sexual addiction as fearlessly as British director Steve McQueen has in Shame." |

Billy,
I will bet you $100 that if you see Shame you will loathe it as much as I did. |

What a load of bullshit. Stomach-churning is more like it. Shame attempts to be shocking and in your face with its non-stop debauchery but in fact it is a slick pointless piece of shit. Porn chic that went out of fashion in the 1980s. And it does something particularly vile when it sends a straight man into a hardcore (ala the Ramrod) gay club (shot in hellish reds) to get his dick sucked. The message is that this guy is so sex-addicted and filled with self-loathing he'll even descend into the nightmare world of the homo underground to get his fix. Ooooooh. Ain't that edgy? Not! It's a fucking cheap shot in a movie full of cheap shots and cliches. Here's the list (spoilers in white):
1. A rich stylish New Yorker likes anonymous one-night stands because he has a fear of commitment.
2. His suicidal sister needs but can't get any brotherly love. He can't commit to that either.
3. When the sex-addicted guy finally meets a woman he cares about he can't get an erection.
4. The sex-addict deep down hates himself so he intentionally picks a fight in a bar so he'll get the shit knocked out of him. After the beating, he goes to a gay club to be further humiliated.
5. It takes the near-death of the sister to awaken some feelings in the sex-addict.
6. But he just can't break the addiction and ends back on the prowl for more pussy.
The end.
The only thing I learned from the movie is that Michael Fassbender has a big cock and Carey Mulligan has her pubic hair shaved to look like a black mohawk. |

There is one and only one Steve McQueen. Fuck that pretentious Brit bastard.
(I have informed opinions, too, but I'll need money up front for those...) |

Sounds horrendous. Think I'll skip the screening. |

I found Hunger to be ugly and empty.
Didn't like the style at all.
Shame sounds like a must-miss.
Sounds worse than Caveh Zahedi I Am a Sex Addict which annoyed me thoroughly.
Apparently, McQueen is going to direct a biopic on African musician and activist Fela Kuti. No idea what they would be like, but I I'll wait for that one. |

I've never been impressed by the real Steve McQueen.
I'll certainly take Marc's advice about Shame. I can just picture the minds of the critics who praised it...."Oh, so edgy. This is a ground breaker. I'm hip, I love it." |

Well, that's something.

I have. (But seriously, I enjoy his natural acting and think sometimes it hides how good he is, leading to underappreciation of The Real Steve McQueen.) Just an opinion, YMMV, and all that stuff.) |

I really like the real McQueen, too, except when he moves out of his comfort zone. McQueen was not a good fit for the Cary Grant-ish moves of The Thomas Crown Affair, for instance. |

I don't find The Thomas Crown Affair to be terrible, but I do prefer the remake on both counts - Brosonan v. McQueen and Russo v. Dunaway - so I guess ultimately I am in agreement. The overly stylistic direction of the original TTCA bothers me more than any acting in the flick. Strangely, the same stylistic hoo-ha (split screens, etc.) didn't bother me a bit in Grand Prix. That being said, for me McQueen was pitch perfect in Bullitt, The (lesser than TSS) Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, etc. -- as you note, all the "Steve McQueen roles." |

Carey Mulligan with a merkin. Hmmm.
Yes to McQueen in McQueen roles. No to Thom. Crown.
Yes to "Jeff" and anything with Judy Greer (who may have Nebraska roots). |
