Pretty sure I read that somewhere.
Has anyone seen Kevin Smith's Red State?
The deeveedee just turned up here and I guess I can be the guinea pig.
Yes, 2014 release for LR. "In Time" has some similar plot points, but after reading the synopsis, I see it's different and in some respects, a sort of opposite scenario. People stop aging at 25, if they can buy some kind of immortality treatment, but if you run out of money, then it turns into a variation on the theme of "Repo Men." Might be more of a "Rule of Two" with Repo Men, than LR.
Am renting Red State from a Redbox this weekend. Will join the guinea piggery. |

Reporting from the Austin Film Festival.
Unlike Billy, I thought Martha Marcy May Marlene was a bit of a drag, promising much but delivering little. Imagine the Manson Family meets Ingmar Bergman somewhere in the Catskills.
I highly recommend Butter for fans of Smile and Election.
I'm seeing The Rum Diaries tomorrow and interviewing Johnny Depp for Dangerous Minds. |

Marc--You might want to check out After Fall, Winter, my stepson Eric Schaeffer's film, tonight at 8:15. I sing a few bars of a song I wrote, in French. I'm just a voice, but the movie is interesting and quite kinky. The leading lady is a sensational French actress named Lizzie Brochere, and Eric won the Best Actor award at the recent Boston Film Festival.
Since Smile and Election are two of my all-time favorite movies, I will definitely be seeing Butter. |

Was at the dvd shop and forgot to buy Red State today. Maybe it was because it's a very small shop and the owners were eating dinner in the middle of the place. I did snag Minui a Paris by some French guy Woody Alain (okay so maybe only the film title is in French, not his name).
Also picked up The Shaft, a miner family drama set in poor western China, from 2008, and no doubt made in the wake of the success of Blind Shaft, a very good gritty film.
And a 4 disc/8 film bundle called Landmarks of Early Soviet Film. I'm not even terribly sure what's on it, but familair with some of the director's names mentioned amid the Chinese and it looks very interesting, and it was once current ... |

I've seen it happen -- in Sgt. Kabukiman -- not a pretty sight.
I guess that was body explosion ... |

Midnight in Paris is entirely okay.
It goes through many familiar Woody tropes.
Most of the dialogue sounded like retreads.
One-liners seemed either dated or uninspired.
I hated the opening dialogue and Rachel McAdams was annoying the whole time. Intentionally so, I suppose. Inez and Gil seemed to have nothing in common. But a lot of the relationship were quickly sketched, and scenes often seemed like theater.
He introduces so many famous '20's figures that he has to constantly mention there names so we know who is who. And then he doesn't have much for any of them to do. I liked how Man Ray finds Owen/Woody/Gil's problem to be entirely normal. The scene with the Picasso painting was also good. And that was about it.
I kept wondering why the 20's artiste/expats would find Gil remotely interesting. I kept waiting for Gil to whip out something from the 21st C to impress them. Since you could take anything from the last 90 years, it shouldn't be too hard. I assume something as simple as Euros or a contact lens would wow them, not to mention a Kindle, laptop or cellphone totally blowing their minds. Of course, in Woody's world the computer probably hasn't been invented yet, but I think the first thing a young writer would do is go back to the hotel and google these people, hit up wiki for info, maybe print out something they wrote/painted in the 30's, etc.
An equivalence to the film's theme is how Woody's 2010 film is really a rehash of his 70's and early 80's output. Especially in the early going, it isn't hard to spot the Annie Hall parallels. And I guess all his fans yearn for those golden years instead of appreciating the present enough ... |

I knew Michelle Williams was playing Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn but I hadn't realized that Kenneth Branagh will finally be realizing his lifelong dream of becoming Sir Laurence Olivier. |
