Despite my growing love for Gosling (Of the ones you mentioned, Blue Valentine and Fracture were particularly awesome), I have no desire at all to see The Notebook, his biggest hit to date. Sounds absolutely icky. |

The university here has a Claes Oldenburg sculpture called Torn Notebook. When a friend and I staggered out of a showing of The Notebook, we wandered a couple of blocks over to the sculpture and sat under it, making jokes and basically tearing The Notebook to pieces. |

The Notebook did have Gena Rowlands in it..........she's never to be missed. I can't remember Gosling.......just know that's where he got together with Rachel McAdams. |

Gena Rowlands and James Garner, two of my favorites. But I just caught parts of it on TV. I've never seen a Ryan Gosling movie. |

I saw Gosling in Half-Nelson, where I liked him and Nancy couldn't stand him, and in Stay, where I thought he was okay. And apparently in Murder by Numbers, where I was more impressed by Sandra Bullock in what may be her best performance. |

Upward, onward, heart beating, legs straining. Then, at the summit, at trail’s end, I see a silhouette of something big and black. I’m doomed. I’ve been mulling that wonderful line, attributed to a baseball pitcher, but used by Native Americans and put to good use in “The Big Lebowski”: Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.
In this case, the bear is a horse, and comes with a wrangler, chewing tobacco.
“See you got your bear spray,” he says.
“Yep.”
“You know, that stuff is pretty pricey ($52!).
And may not even save you.
A grizzly charges you, she’s gonna run right through the spray.”
“That so.”
“You’re better off using bee spray.”
“But won’t the bear run through that as well?”
“Probably.
But the bee spray is only gonna cost you two bucks.” |

Gosling was rather (I might even say "very") miscast in Murder by Numbers, but I still thought he held his own. Bullock was better than usual. The movie is not bad at all and (for a mainstream feature) surprisingly grim.
Gosling can polarize people (I'm referring to Nancy's reaction). My best friend, who doesn't usually have such strong reactions for or against, despised Gosling's performance in Fracture, which my friend found actory and excessive.
I've rarely felt less than ecstatic about Gosling's performances. (Loved him in Half Nelson, which btw has no hyphen in the title.) Seeing The Ides of March on Tuesday, and can't wait. The experience will be enhanced by an after-screening Q&A with director/co-star George Clooney. Should be fun. |

The Ides of March are arriving early, then.
I remember seeing Murder by Numbers and thinking it was pretty grim - would have to see again to say if Gosling was miscast or not. Gosling's Steve McQ fandom manifested in that film, as it was he who asked the director if he could drive a Mustang, the same car that McQ drove in Bullitt. I really liked him in Stay, an under-appreciated sci-fi reality bender.

My wife liked it a lot, from which I conclude it is exactly the sort of thing you will like if you like that sort of thing. I have spent a couple of worse hours. |

Yeah, sorry, I closed the window and lost the link before I pasted that stuff here.
The easiest way to find anything like that is to just copy the first paragraph and drop it whole into google.

The part I quoted comes at the very end.
$52 for bear spray seems ridiculous.
I hear the bears only pay $12 for human spray. |

I've seen that movie two or three times........I was most interested in Michael Pitt.......and found Gosling unlikeable but not at all miscast. That is one of my favorite Bullock movies......along with The Net. |

I've seen it a couple of times myself. Despite flaws, it's really interesting, not least because of its unusual depressive quality. |

Barbet Shroeder.
If you are looking forward to Lars Von Trier's latest (Melancholia with Kirsten Dunst) check her out along with Gosling in All Good Things. It streams on Netflix........is greatly overlooked......has Frank Langella and Lilly Rabe (Jill Clayburgh's daughter)..........
Billy........if you like depressive quality it's there. |

I'm a real fan of Gosling, so I'm excited to see Ides of March too. Looks like my kind of film. I can hardly wait. |

Don't miss Drive in your eagerness to see The Ides of March. The latter seems more my kind of movie, but Drive is as good as it gets. |
