The Naked Spur is one of those movies I've meant to see for quite a while, but because it's a Western (one of my least favored genres) I've put it off. Finally caught up with it and glad I did. It's not a favorite, not even a favorite Western, but it has a great cast doing good work. Jimmy Stewart is a bounty hunter, a flawed hero who gets to do nervous breakdown duty a la the later Vertigo. Robert Ryan is the bounty, a killer wanted dead or alive. Janet Leigh is with Ryan--on what basis it's unclear for a long time. Ralph Meeker and Millard Mitchell fill out a five-member cast. That's right: only five speaking roles, but Anthony Mann directs them well--although Stewart and Ryan have been allowed to overact a bit.
For me, the Hitchcock fanatic, the most interesting aspect of the film was the opportunity to see Stewart and Leigh interacting pre-Rear Window and Psycho. They have pretty good chemistry (their scenes together are arguably the best in the movie) but are clearly waiting for Hitch to open the door to greatness. |

Harris was also good in the 90's film adaptation of Riders of the Purple Sage. I'll look for Appaloosa.
The Naked Spur -- haven't seen it. Westerns, generally, are not my favorite genre, but the flawed-hero or anti-hero western seems to be a solid formula. |

I loved "Riders of the Purple Sage" too, which also featured Mrs. Harris, Amy Madigan. She ought to be in more movies. I'll try to check out "Appaloosa" as well. I'm not sure about "The Naked Spur"--I never was into James Stewart westerns. Loved him in comedies, not so much as the weathered guy on Pye. |

I liked Last Chance Harvey as much as everyone else here did. A romance probably can't ever be described as realistic, but the emotions expressed by Hoffman and Thompson felt like they were from real life. At one point the movie did borrow heavily from An Affair to Remember, but what's wrong with that? |

I LOVE Netflix streaming on my tv. It is the most fun I've had in home viewing ever. Last night I randomly chose a Danish flick from 2008 called Terribly Happy. I've never seen a better film combine the erotic thriller genre with a Twilight Zone ploting. Very cool. I bet Gromit is the only one who has seen this. |

I reviewed it back here:

I saw it through Netflix streaming too, but on a computer; it's been there a while. |

I've been kinda sorta wanting to watch Terribly Happy for a long time. This seals the deal. |

No doubt.......you liked it too, Syd. For a film with subtitles it's very soothing because there's not much dialogue.
And Billy........I meant to thank you for Terri. I loved it. The best teen/outsider/highschool depiction ever. |

One problem I have with streaming on a computer is that night scenes tend to be so dark I can't see anything. I'm ordering The Twilight Samurai to be sent to me because it was unviewable on the computer. |

I hate streaming, but probably wouldn't hate it as much if I had a PlayStation or something that allowed me to watch it through my t.v., rather than my laptop.
But I hate the move from discs to streaming, on principal. One wonders how soon it will be before owning a movie becomes prohibitively expensive, or what the market forces will do to the availability of the kinds of movies I want to watch. |

Interesting point. We may return to the days when the cost of buying a VHS or Beta copy of a movie was close to a hundred dollars. I remember buying "Road Warrior" on Beta for $89.99. |
