Gary--Sounds like we are into Signs territory here.

Not quite Signs. There was virtually nothing I liked about Signs.

They were all silly.

Not that it was necessarily their fault. The script was a joke. Tin foil hats, "hit away blah blah" or whatever it was. Culkin, I don't even remember what he did, but he was probably OK. All and all it was the movie that stunk not the performers. Maybe stunk isn't the right word, ridiculous is more to the point.

Sigh.

The only part of your review I agree with, Gary, is that the grossness ran a little long in places. I found the whole vomiting-in-the-dress-shop, shitting-in-the-street a bit too much -- seemed like having the Apatows bankroll the film created some kind of obligation to have a scene like that.

It was way more than a bit too much. All the women in the theatre (the audience was almost all women) were laughing loudly. Seem to have the sense of humour akin to juvenile males. The only puking scene I can remember ever having a great laugh at was in Team America World Police. As far as crapping goes, never found it funny. For me disgusting isn't funny.

I have to admit that was not one of my favorite scenes, but the brilliance of the competitive toast scene and the efforts to get the attention of the cop made up for a lot. Oh, and the puppies. Really smart, adding puppies.

I am not a fan of gross-out humor, but I found the scene in the wedding dress shop to be hysterically funny. It was not my favorite scene either, but it had me screaming in horror, and then screaming with laughter. Sorry.

Of course, the competitive toast, the "getting the cop's attention," the destruction of the cookie, the plane trip (a W.C. Fields-level classic)*, etc., were all hilarious.

Then there were lovely human scenes like anything with Wiig and O'Dowd, Wiig and Rudolph (these had me tearing up), and even the later scenes with Wiig and Byrne. Capped by the credit sequence with Wiig and Rudolph singing along to you know what....well, this had me outright crying.

Add to these the warmth of Jill Clayburgh, the skill of Jon Hamm, and the brilliance of Melissa McCarthy, and you have a great film.

Nope, Gary. About certain things there are facts, and one of them is that about Bridesmaids you are Just. Plain. Wrong. Smile

* Reminiscent, in its length and willingness to let things play out, of the "Carl LaFong" sequence in It's a Gift.

But wait. There's more!

SPOILER IN WHITE:

The movie also has the guts to make its leading character borderline despicable on occasion. Her absolute bottom comes in the jewelry store when she drops the c word on the little teenage girl. Sure, Annie is melting down and almost ready for an institution at this point, but certain things are inexcusable, and they don't shy away from it. It's soon after this scene that Megan works her "fight club" magic on Annie and things turn around. How anyone can knock this movie is beyond me.

You're right, Billy. In fact, when I saw the film, a couple of people in the audience applauded when Megan told her off. (It's so nice to see a movie in a theater once in a while. I didn't know what she was ineptly saying in Spanish during the toast competition, but a group of people down front were in such hysterics that I knew they knew.)

IIRC, it was schoolbook Spanish phrases (like "I have lost my notebook") that she was trying to somehow construct a speech from.

Melissa McCarthy's tough love scene was a wonder. And yes, it was great to see Wiig take her character down to the really nasty bottom of the barrel before swimming back up. The great comic/dramatic moments outweighed the pooping and puking.

The most unnecessary puke scene remains, for me, the obese diner in Monty Python's TMOL.

The Python scene is certainly disgusting; even more nauseating is the scene in Trainspotting where the guy whips the sheet around and shit flies everywhere. Now that is guh-ross, but because it's in the service of a drama directed by Danny Boyle nobody complains.

Thanks for the translation, Bart. I figured it was something like that. From what little Spanish I've picked up from subway posters, it sounded like she was just stringing together whatever words she could remember.

And yes, the TMOL scene was memorably over the top. I've never looked at an after-dinner mint the same way since.

Unnecessary? Nonsense. Puking was that scene's raison d'etre.
