Gary--You're right on all counts. I just didn't love the movie the way I loved the other two, so it was in that respect a disappointment to me. |

Thomas McCarthy's Win Win with Paul Giamatti has a theme somewhat similar to that of The Blind Side, and is quite enjoyable and engaging. With earlier films like The Station Master and The Visitor, Mr. McCarthy is becoming one of my favorite directors. |

Saw Bridesmaids for the second time tonight. It holds up and more; it improves on a second viewing. It's a classic film comedy, and audiences seem to agree. It's a monster sleeper hit. With any justice, there will be two Oscar nominations for Kristen Wiig--for original screenplay and for Best Actress. What a woman! |

So far he's three for three. Something occurred to me the other day. I've seen all three of his movies at The Globe theatre here. It's a theatre in Winnipeg that shows a movie or two every week or so that doesn't play at the other theatres and these three were only shown at the Globe. The Conspirator is also showing there and not at any other venue. I guess the mainstream theatres have no interest in non-blockbuster films regardless of how good they are.
Did any of these movies get wide release down south? |

The Conspirator actually made it to the multiplex down here, which surprised me some. Then again, this is LINCOLN, Nebraska. |

No matter what I thought about the relative merits of Win Win vis-a-vis The Visitor and The Station Agent, the fact is that Thomas McCarthy is three for three and that is pretty damned impressive. |

My sister is gathering five girlfriends to go to see "Bridesmaids" tonight. And it's not even anyone's birthday! |

They're gonna have a blast, I predict. And it's not even really a "chick flick." It's for anybody with a sense of humor and/or a heart. The raucous comedy scenes are the key to the film's success, but the warmth generated between Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph/Chris O'Dowd put the icing on the cake. |

Gary, The Conspirator (and Win Win) are playing at the local dinner theater, not at the multiplex. The Visitor never arrived here. I had to go to Albany to see it in an 'art theater'. I forget where I saw The Station Master.

It's best to see The Station Master on a big screen.
The Visitor came to the art house here first, then when it did amazingly well at that small venue, the theater chain got a copy and showed it at the multiplex.
Piles of djembes appeared almost overnight at local music shops.
Looks like MiP will make it here next Friday. Finally. |

Thanks, marantz. Too bad the movie didn't merit more attention. It's not horrible by any means; it'll pass the time on a weeknight or a flight.
Mrs Daffy & I have been avoiding NYC movie theaters for quite some time: Bedbugs, and all that (not that we have time to go to the theater much, anyway). |

Who has seen it here?
I reviewed it back here. I was impressed by the boy. |

I didn't think Bridesmaids was perfect..........I think Kristen Wiig overdid it. She was in too many scenes and repeated her behavior in a scene more times than necessary.......it was too much "can you see me, aren't I funny"
A movie I would like to see again soon and then have a copy of to watch again and again at home would be The Double Hour. I love a good romantic thriller and they don't come any better than this. It's Italian and features two wonderful actors: Ksenlya Rappoport......a Russian playing a Slovak and Filippo Timi.........a would-be clone of Javier Bardem. These two meet at a speed-dating function in Turin. She's a hotel maid. He's a former cop working as a security guard. It's a film I don't want to give away.......it has to be seen for the performances........but the plot is alot of fun, too. |

I thought The Double Hour was very good, too--but nowhere near as good as Bridesmaids. And that's what makes horse races. If Kristen Wiig "overdid it," then I'd like to see more actors overdo it. She was brilliant. |
