Scoop is the only Woody Allen movie of the last decade that I have not seen.

I don't believe I've seen it, either. Still remembering how good Match Point was.

I'd even say Nicholson is a better Joker than Heath Ledger.

It's politically incorrect to say so, but I agree wholeheartedly with you on this. Nicholson's Joker was one of his best performances--perhaps his last really great one--and Ledger's has been overpraised and Academy-Awarded largely because of his sad passing and partially because he lost the Oscar for Brokeback Mountain.

Not sure if I consider Nicholson over Ledger... they are Jokers from different angles and eras. Jack's Joker was more defined and eloquent. Whereas Ledger's Joker was more gritty and deranged . Both characters followed the original story line, but IMO, from different perspectives.

Given that, my favorite Batman movie is Batman Returns. Danny Devito's penguin (aside from my personal animal preference) was pretty deranged and quirky, making for a nice dark side to an already darker-than-the-first-movie sequel.

Rethinking my refusal to see The Tree of Life. Too many mainsteam critics are embracing it to ignore. May have to check it out. With trepidation, needless to say.

Really going out on a limb there, Billy.

(cough)

Billy did you read the link I posted with a review of The Tree of Life that was a fictional interview? It sounded like a remake of The Thin Red Line in different clothing.

Yeah. Now you've got me flip-flopping. Oh, dear.

I think you should see it Billy. You can tell me if it was better or worse than you thought. The review I linked was so in line with how I thought about Malick, (OK, I only saw The Thin Red Line), that I was sure I would hate The Tree of Life just as much, which is quite an achievement.

I'm in Omaha now and I'll be back in Winnipeg on Sunday after Fargo where I will be tomorrow. Loved the movie. Then I can start to see a bunch of movies. If The Tree of Life plays there I might go to see it and leave after 15 minutes and ask for my money back.

The way I read it, the first part of The Tree of Life sounds quite interesting. There is a sequence later that sounds as though it will try the tolerance of anyone except a Malick fanatic. The description actually reminds me more of A.I. than The Thin Red Line. (Two of my most hated films.)

Hate Malick. Wanking with a camera. You'd have to pay me to get me in a theater for The Twee of Life. Of course, if people start fighting about it, then I will find myself going, against my better judgment. That's how these message boards work, right?

Agree with Chilly on Batman Returns. Bale my favorite bat, and deVito was great.

knox--Bale was not in Batman Returns, though DeVito was. Bale was in Batman Begins. Keaton is still by far my favorite Batman.

Bale's my favorite, and I like both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I like Batman and Batman Returns (the second more than the first because I like DeVito), but not the sequels. Nicholson's Joker's more fun. Ledger's seems like he got out of the wrong side of bed, but a nihilist Joker is an interesting take.

I still like Adam West....

But then, super hero franchise movies are not something I go out of my way to see.

I'm in Fargo. I'm going to look for some klutz tonight to plan a kidnapping with. I think Michele Bachmann is a perfect target. Though I doubt anyone would pay her ransom.

Thanks. Apparently, given enough time, I somehow graft Batman movies on to each other. Yes, I meant I especially liked Bale in Batman Begins.

Marantzo: if you have time, cross the river, and grab Tim Pawlenty too.
