Just saw Rabbit Hole and it deserves its hype. Kidman, Wiest, Eckhart, all absolutely stellar. A film that could have gone maudlin in so many ways and didn't, instead delivering a slice of life with a stunning ring of truth. Pacing, dialog, photography all taking their time, rendering something so fine and so convincing that all the technique and artistry is made transparent -- you experience the beating heart of this story. |

I echo bartist. This is the first Kidman performance ever in which I think she fully justifies her sometimes wild overpraise. |

I'm Kidman's biggest fan. I love her in everything........I even loved her at the Grammys.......rocking to Mick Jagger....
127 Hours
a film I planned to stay away from......but was compelled to see on the big screen because I love Utah. Now.........I have the candidate for director of the year: Danny Boyle. That was a real life story that was hard to make.......and what he did was to show Aron Ralston's persona from the inside out. The beginning of the film with it's music, it's color, the split screen, the quick energy..........gave you the testosterone fueled, daring adventurer up close.
All that excitement and energy and bravado.
And then he's trapped..........and what do you do with that?
It was the BEST directed film of the year. And I'm glad I overcame my resistance to seeing it. |

Well when he started gnawing off his arm, I left...decided it was something I hadn't done yet so why spoil the surprise. |

So you only view films with dismemberment after you have yourself experienced said dismemberment? Is that a firm rule? |

I'll probably wait to catch A Farewell to Arm when it hits Netflix. That way, well, if it is too much I can just shut it off. |

You need to see it on the big screen.........if you've never been to Utah you might not be compelled........but it captures the thrill of the region. And it captures the man vs. nature dynamic. This has a little of the Into the Wild spirit......but more physical, less social, no dysfunctional family. Then again.......I'm reading Robinson Crusoe now. |

Utah definitely has a spectacular topography. I've driven through it many times and there is a large section (Bryce Canyon?) that looks like the landscape of the moon, where the Mormons belong. |

Utah is amazing.
There's a national park in Idaho, Craters of the Moon.
All sorts of volcanic debris. Cool place. |

Even if Lorne suddenly appears, I doubt that we have the time to have a full blown Blanches this year. Perhaps we should consider a stripped down version. Just Best Picture, Director and Acting categories. Any thoughts? |

Let's do it. But really, where is Lorne? This is getting scary. |

Billy,
I presume people have been messaging Lorne, so I agree his silence is spooky. I hope he's okay. |
