Okay, it's second-hand overrating. The Social Network is a strong favorite, but there's a tendency to try to make a horse race out of the Oscars, even when people knew Schindler's List and Titanic were cinches.
True enough, except that Schindler's and Titanic were Obvious Mortal Locks when it was only 5 movies on the slate, not 10, certainly not 10 with a final ballot citing 3, not 1, but 3 Best Picture choices, in order of preference (1-2-3), which opens up the whole contest in a way it hasn't been before, or at least not in decades. The Oscars are a horse race. This town essentially eats, breathes and thinks about little else, from mid-fall until roughly two weeks after the ceremony, and the cycle slowly begins anew.
Regardless, it seems fairly certain, scant hours before Nomination Sunrise, that Social and King's remain the front-runners. But (instashift to Lauren Bacall, presciently on the Red Carpet the year she was Sentimental Shoo-InNOT) there are always surprises.

Editing, editing, here we go, Oscar time's upon us...

The publicists seem to be trying to make True Grit into the genuine spoiler, and I'm beginning to be afraid it's going to win. Never thought I'd be actively rooting against the Coen brothers, whose work I absolutely adore when I adore it, but True Grit just isn't all that.

As much as I loved The Fighter and I did love it - I think The Social Network is a better film. TF had an easier time being entertaining based on its content, but TSN was as entertaining, if not more so, and it had far less action to keep you interested. I need to see The King's Speech to round out the top 3.

And you need to see Another Year to round out the top one.

Am I the only one here that was totally underwhelmed by The Social Network? And I'm a big Fincher fan.

I thought Social Network was okay. It got repetitive, predictable and somewhat boring going back to the deposition room and then to a flashback. And the deposition stuff wasn't very compelling in itself, but used as a device to show Zuckerman as arrogant and to connect the story. The characters weren't very interesting. So, someone got screwed in a business deal. Okay...

Then again, I didn't see the excitement of Zodiac which I also thought was rather ho-hum.

The Social Network was for me better than "okay," better than "underwhelming," but not remotely a great film. As many have said, it fails to grab the heart, a big minus in my book. The acting from the two leads Eisenberg and Garfield was exemplary, the pace was swift, and the film was very entertaining in many ways. But the best film of the year? No. It barely makes my top ten list. (Squeaks in at #10.)

As everyone here should know, I'm not a big fan of Fincher. I didn't like his Alien endeavour and loathed Seven, which got me to swear off him. Accidentally I watched The Game on TV here last year and thought it was a load of crap only to find out it was directed by Fincher. Big surprise.

I gave up my boycott of Fincher when The Social Network opened and had very good reviews and the story sounded interesting. A very well done film that I enjoyed very much. And Fincher's use of drab colours which is sort of an obsession with him actually worked nicely when he used it in TSN. I didn't see Zodiac not only because of Fincher, but because I had no interest in the story. For me TSN is when Fincher actually became a good director, not letting his gross gimmicks ruin his films.

My reaction to TSN is akin to my reaction to Punch Drunk Love. Though I thought that P.T. Anderson was talented but immature (unlike Fincher whom I thought was just a schlock meister), PDL for me was Anderson grown up and using his talent effectively.

IIRC, you didn't like PDL, Marc, but did like Anderson's earlier work. We have different tastes it seems.

Zodiac is for me by far Fincher's best movie. (I'm not a fan either.) Saw Zodiac twice and would gladly see it again. I'll revisit The Social Network, too. It's very much his second-best for me. Like Gary, I loathed his Alien attempt, The Game, and Fight Club (yes). Se7en was well made but hateful.

Oscar nominations are out. They're lame. IMO.

http://tinyurl.com/6fq94aa

I've seen all but one of the major nominations, Javier Bardem in Biutiful. Just saw Blue Valentine and Animal Kingdom this week. Where did this Jacki Weaver nomination come from? Sounds like pure politicking to me. She's fine in the role, but it's basically nothing special. Michelle Williams is excellent in BV, but again, not inherently Oscar-worthy like Lesley Manville in Another Year. Mike Leigh was nominated for screenplay. Well, at least that's something.

No Mila Kunis. Weaver and Steinfeld stole her spot. Yuck.

Inla, I want answers! Smile

No one ever mentions Panic Room. There's a reason for that.

Zodiac is the only Fincher I've liked without reservation.

Wow, I'm officially way behind, having seen only 4 of the nominated films + 2 of the docs.
Surprised that Rabbit Hole wasn't one of the Ten Best pic nominees. Better than the three I've seen that made the cut.

Fwiw, I love Fight Club.
And Social Network just slipped into my Top 16.
