Anyone know anything about a Brit film Skeletons?
Some sort of off-beat indie comedy based on removing skeletons from people's closets or something.
Was released in July in the UK, not yet in the States.
I like trying these indie films prior to US release, so I guess I'll give it a whirl. |

Hear, hear on Jesse Eisenberg and Michael Douglas. But I suspect this is Colin Firth's year.
That movie hasn't even been released yet. What makes you think he's a sure thing? The trailer looks boring.
Billy, I've heard similar buzz and some of it from Colin Firth's own camp! |

| Saw The Social Network last night with Earl. I really liked it, and actually I liked Eisenberg's Zuckerberg. I've known guys like this (I think several people on this site probably have), and the way he gets a highly intelligent person's stunted social skills is great. I didn't find him dislikable, but I understood why he ended up friendless. There's a kind of Asperger syndrome quality to such people. |

Without a doubt. Me too.
I'll add my voice to this thought. I love Zodiac (note the spelling) and enjoy the hell out of The Social Network. These are the only Fincher films I like. The cult for Fight Club is incomprehensible to me. |

Billy, I'm with you on Fight Club (and occasionally meet people who want to found one, with me, due to my failure to jump on the bandwagon), but I suspect that Lorne may have nailed it -- it's a kind of bent entertainment, hallucinogenic and blackly funny.
Someone mentioned (Melody?) that Zodiac ran too long, but that seemed part of the point -- it's about a long-running obsession. It's supposed to feel long. |

Never Let Me Go is playing here at one theatre. My neighbourhood theatre. The review in our paper was a very favourable one. Read Ebert's review also.
It's not a movie that I want to see even though it sounds like a very good movie. There are many very good movies that aren't for me. |

I loathe movies that are too long--loathe loathe loathe them--but Zodiac, undeniably a verrrrry long film, felt exactly right. Any shorter would have been too peremptory for the subject. It is a perfect film, one of the most unjustly unawarded of the decade. Fight Club, on the other hand, is ridiculously over-venerated. |

| Maybe that was my trouble with Zodiac, because I often have trouble with long films. I just remember totally losing interest. Maybe I'll give it another try -- though I'd be more up for that if it wasn't long. |

So, not up for Solaris (Tarkovski ver.), then?
Hitchcock said a film should be "of a length that respects the human bladder." |

In general, I'm a big fan of 1 hour 40 minutes.
But it depends on the film.
Last year, I enjoyed An Education, but thought it ended too hurriedly and could have used an extra 15 minutes or so. (that was An Education, wasn't it?). And I watched The Human Condition in one weekend, and Satantango in one go.
It really depends how things are handled.
Frequently, pace is more important than length.
I really like films which veer off in unexpected directions for the third act.
I often check the length of a film before I toss on a dvd, so I know what to expect -- and hopefully can avoid turning a film off for the night 10 minutes before it ends.
I have trouble deciding if it is good if a film leaves me wanting more, or if that is a flaw in the film. I go back and forth on that. |

Quote: …
"Never Let Me Go" would have made a serious error in ramping up contrived melodrama toward some sort of science-fiction showdown. This is a movie about empathy…
…
This is such a meditative, delicate film…
… What is happening is implied, not spelled out. We are required to observe. Even the events themselves are amenable to different interpretations. The characters may not know what they're revealing about themselves. They certainly don't know the whole truth of their existence. We do, because we are free humans. It is sometimes not easy to extend such stature to those we value because they support our comfort.
I think the above extracts from Roger Ebert's masterful review tell us exactly why this film has not been a wide release and marketing push. |

| My only problem is with lengthy comedies. I don't mind a drama going on and on, but brevity is the soul of wit. No comedy should exceed the 90 minute mark. |

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it's the best Woody Allen film maybe ever. He's not in it and nobody acts like him in it. Anthony Hopkins plays the older guy with the young wife.......but it's handled in a fresh, not perverted way. I think it's the cast, too that's great together. I keep getting amazed by Josh Brolin. He has such range. Naomi Watts doesn't move me the way she did in Mulholland Drive. She plays terse well, but that's no fun. I could write more........it's a wonderful movie. |

Well, Betsy, if you think the latest Woody Allen film is terrific and you think Woody is a cheating, incestuous paedophile, it must be really good.
It's not here yet, but of course I'll see it. |
