The only Nicole Holofcener movie I saw was Lovely and Amazing. I liked it very much so I can't make a judgment about Please Give unless I see it.

When did that ever stop you?

You're right. I didn't see Please Give and I loved it.

Don't American horses race on dirt?

Incidentally, Phar Lap was bred in New Zealand and the area of the Waikato where I am staying (Phar Lap is from the South Island) is famous for its studs. No jokes please.

Same here. Had they done the story of Exterminator, Disney could have had a Disney-esque flick (though no Triple Crown) without revising a whole lot of history.

I read a book on Exterminator when I was a kid. That would make quite a movie.

Billy,

I agree with your comments about Diaz and Cruz, but I have never been convinced by jennifer Lopez. Neither have I been taken by any of the characters. I think she either lacks warmth or the ability to project it as an actress.

I basically agree with this assessment. Lopez's lack of warmth is her greatest detriment. When she plays "nice" it seems somewhat phony. Her only 100% convincing performance was in Out of Sight, in which her character's acidity and the direction by Steven Soderbergh helped her enormously.

This comment finally got me out of lurk mode. I'm not sure if I am the only Third Eye member to have seen El Cantante or maybe the only one here who has reviewed it. But Jennifer Lopez was excellent in it. As I said at the time, I think it is far and away her best work and I'm a huge fan of Out of Sight.

Heh heh. I just edited that three-year-old El Cantante post because I noticed a spelling error. This is what posting with Billy can do to a person.

By the way, speaking of those in "lurk" mode, I join the others in welcoming Jeremy and Shannon back into the mix. Stick around, guys. It's good to see you both again.

I think I'm also one of the very few people who actually enjoyed the widely-trashed Gigli, in which Lopez had some pretty funny scenes.

I got a kick out of Gigli ("It rhymes with 'really'"), myself. An offbeat comedy that people were too eager to revile before they even saw it.

My first read of the morning was the review of Secretariat. Now I'm wondering which critics were on the Disney Co.'s take.

Here is the review from todays Free Press:

http://tinyurl.com/25brhmt

A hint about the review; It's titled Horse MANURE. And on a similar note, the title of the review for Life As We Know It is, Contrived rom-com stinks like full diaper.

Seems like a lot of crap around.

Maybe there will ultimately be a pro-Gigli backlash. Any movie that features Christopher Walken and Al Pacino in very effective and funny cameos, and a David Mamet-like conversation by Bennifer about cunnilingus can't be all bad.

In fact, I really liked the movie. Haven't ever been able fully to understand the hatred for it. I think it had a lot to do with the urge to knock Affleck and Lopez.

Movies get a reputation, and people view them in relation to that reputation. Yes, the "Bennifer" phenomenon really hurt the movie. (And I think both are fairly irritating media personalities, but that has nothing to do with their work on film.)

I don't particularly care for either of them as a rule, but I thought their chemistry in Gigli was pretty darn good.

And yes, I know this belongs in Couch. Life is that way.

Fincher/Sorkin's The Social Network delivers. The story of amoral pursuit of success of an asocial geek is entertaining and dramatic. Unfortunately however it is doing only so-so at the box office.

The Hurt Locker did so-so and won the Oscar. The Social Network was never positioned to be the next Avatar. I wonder why people are so surprised that it's not an absolute blockbuster.
