I agree with your comments about Diaz and Cruz, but I have never been convinced by jennifer Lopez. Neither have I been taken by any of the characters. I think she either lacks warmth or the ability to project it as an actress.
I basically agree with this assessment. Lopez's lack of warmth is her greatest detriment. When she plays "nice" it seems somewhat phony. Her only 100% convincing performance was in Out of Sight, in which her character's acidity and the direction by Steven Soderbergh helped her enormously. |

Boy, when you're right, you're right.
I'm hoping Diaz will make a full recovery from The Box.
Against my natural inclination, I'm going to see The Social Network, thanks to you all slobbering over it for a solid week. I'm not sure what it portends when I'm paying a first-run ticket price for a movie about the invention of Facebook, but I'm hoping it's not a neurological issue. |

| Meanwhile, I continue to believe that The Social Network is a lock for Best Picture, despite inla's clearly informed and always enlightened insights. I also think this is Diane Lane's year for Best Actress. Even more than last year's winner Sandra Bullock was, Lane is way overdue for awards recognition, and she's gonna get it, for, of all unexpected movies, Secretariat. The reviews are coming in, and they are amazingly good, for the movie and particularly for Lane...and for John Malkovich, a non-favorite of mine from way back. |

If "athlete" is the word I am after.
Lane, Benning, Moore.... Lots of long term snubees in the Best Actress running. |

| I'd guess Lane as a candidate is going to be dependent on how well the movie does. If The Blind Side had done only middling business last year, I'd bet Meryl Streep would finally have more Oscars than Hillary Swank. How many people are going to go out and watch a movie about a horse (ok, not a horse, but the horse, but how much does that mean to 20 year olds?) is an interesting question. |

The way it sounds, it's not just a movie about a horse. The human side is very well handled, apparently, with Lane and Malkovich shining as seldom before. |

The overall reviews aren't really that much better than average, I'm not expecting Secretariat to get much in the way of Oscar nominations.
EDIT: I'm a bit baffled at the attempt to make an underdog story about a horse that was never an underdog and whose name was a synonym for blowing the competition away. |

Same here. Had they done the story of Exterminator, Disney could have had a Disney-esque flick (though no Triple Crown) without revising a whole lot of history. |

Ebert says there is absolutely no attempt to turn Secretariat into an underdog. |

| I guess the true underdog of the story is Penny Tweedy, though I certainly never thought of her that way. But with a tagline like "Based on the impossible true story" and lines in the trailer like We just lost a race we can't afford to lose; Secretariat is not afraid...and neither am I; and All right...let's show 'em what you're made of - somebody in Marketing is painting an underdog picture for the masses to lap up. |

If ever there was a film in which I wanted to punch every character -- along with the director twice and the writer a few more times than that -- Please Give is it. And this would work especially well since Nicole Holofcener was the writer-director.
What an annoying film, right from the outset with an irritating little ditty while we are treated to flabby breasts being mammogrammed.
Everyone has poor social skills and awkward conversations. Almost all behavior seemed rather unlikely. None of it is convincing in the least.
I did like Oliver Platt's voice and mannerisms which reminded me a lot of one of my very good friends. |

| Please Give no attention to gromit's post. Please Give is an absolutely sublime movie. |

| Please Give has a very simple premise which is developed via a series of fake interactions by characters with phony pre-occupations. Please give me my money back. |

One of my favourite sports moments was sitting at the bar at the Bleeker Street watching The Belmont and Secretariat coming down the stretch lengthening his lead with every stride until the rest of the field needed cinemascope to be seen. It was jaw dropping.
One of the guys at the bar said, "He belongs in another league." |

| The only Nicole Holofcener movie I saw was Lovely and Amazing. I liked it very much so I can't make a judgment about Please Give unless I see it. |
