I doubt that I'll see either "Cyrus" or "Winter's Bone." There are so few chances I have to see movies these days--after 20 years of seeing one or two a week when I worked for the film class--that I have to choose carefully. I'm just hoping I can make it to "A Solitary Man" before it disappears.

Oddly, since I didn't like Get Him to the Greek that much, probably because I didn't like the style of humor, I think Russell Brand, Jonah Hill and Rose Byrne are all dead on. Elizabeth Moss was awful, but I sympathized with her character, who is working eighteen-hour shifts to become a doctor while her boyfriend is catering to Aldous Snow. The scene with her, Jonah Hill and Russell Brand left a bad taste in my brain, and reminded me of a similarly badly done scene in Chasing Amy.

The scene where Aldous Snow met Jackie Q and their son was interesting because their son appeared to be me at that age. I got the impression that Jackie Q may be questionable as an artist and a wife, but is doing just fine as a parent. One of the best scenes in the movie.

These summer films sound awful.

There's also The Killer Inside Me, which sounds like Chigurh and Tommy Lee Sheriff from No Cunt for Old Men* have been combined into one character, resulting in extreme disinterest from gromit.

* sorry, but that's the way my brain has been processing the title since the film came out.

One preview that made me laugh was Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Apparently to win the purple-haired girl of his dreams he has to defeat the legion of seven evil super-ex-boyfriends out to kill him, who may be musicians in various rock bands ot genric supervillains. I'm sold on this one. It looks delightful.

On the other hand, Charlie St. Cloud may turn out to be a good film, but after being inundated by previews on Hulu and at the movie theater, I've built up a strong resistance. I was a bit surprised looking at wikipedia and seeing what the plot is. It doesn't sound half bad, but the ads look awful.

The plot sounds a bit like Peter Beagle's A Fine and Private Place, a great, delicate novel which would probably not survive Hollywood scriptwriters. The material requires a careful touch, and I'm not optimistic.

The trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World got an audible thumbs down in the theater where I saw it screened in Austin. Looks like shit to me.

No Cunt for Old Men

Thank you Syd for getting me off the hook and posting one the funniest comments I've seen on Third Eye in awhile.

Alas, Gromit posted that one. I was busy laughing at the seven ex-boyfriends.

bartist, get over your bad self and read The Rolling Stone piece. It's good. The cover is intended to be a joke.

OK, that's a bit of a relief (that it's a joke). Otherwise, RS has turned into one of those dr. waiting room zines. As for bad self, it's more like self with tired eyes and big reading pile -- well, that's sort of bad -- sometimes I just have to filter.

Rolling Stone's political articles have been must reading for the past couple of years. Reminds me of their heyday in the sixties.

Matt Taibbi writes terrific pieces. The best of their kind since Hunter S.Thompson.

Toy Story 3 is a ***1/2 star movie where the first two were ****, but the last twenty minutes or so are as good as anything I've seen in theaters in the last couple of years (And the rest is not bad at all.) And three and a half stars makes it the best of the year so far.

Outside of the climax, there was no reason to do the movie in 3-D. If they hadn't, I might have given it that extra half-star.

I thought Toy Story 2 was quite a bit better than TS 1, though I liked the first one also. The second one had more to it and was funnier for me.
