Nowhere Boy is entirely fine, decent, well-done -- but nothing special, imo. I didn't realize until the dvd extras that the director, Sam Taylor-Wood, is a woman.

There's an interesting contrast between his aunt who raises him and his real mother. I thought the guy playing John Lennon seemed a little too old for the 17/18 year old Lennon. Just checking IMDb and he turns 21 next week, so probably 19 or 20 during filming. He does a good job with the accent.

I think the two moments where the film connects the young Lennon to his future success/songs were handled well. Oops ... just realized that there were three references: one to open the film, one to close it and the other tucked in the middle.

Brand fucked a 20 year old girl that was in a group called Satanic Sluts. Sorry, but I can't arouse any indignation over that.

Announcing it on the air (as a way of getting back at her grandfather because he didn't come on to their programme), is a real slime ball move, no matter how you try to justify it.

Gary,

it's what these comedians do. It's the Howard Stern school. Not much humor in being polite.

Fuck, this political correctness crap is making me sick to my stomach. These are people in the entertainment industry. This is what their audiences expect. You don't like it? Don't fucking watch it.

Marc--That's very disingenuous, not to mention really insulting to Howard Stern, who is never gratuitously mean and nasty to undeserving targets like this harmless, elderly character actor.

I repeat, I find Russell Brand to be a disgusting human being.

What?! Howard's made a career out of humiliating midgets, fat people, retarded people...on and on.

See the movie and get back to me. Brand is essentially playing himself...when he was a junkie alcoholic. He's been clean and sober for several years and his book is a pretty interesting chronicle of drug-induced madness and his emergence from it.

I'm certainly going to see the movie, because I don't think talent has much to do with inner worth. And I will take a look at the book. Had no idea that Brand was sober. Interesting; well, you take a drunk horse thief, get him sober, and you have a sober horse thief. Just kidding, sort of. Brand may be a great humanitarian under the skin.

I wonder what announcing, "I fucked your granddaughter," on the air, has to do with political correctness?

Neither can I. I was joking. My daughter has dated worse guys than Brand. And survived, and learned valuable life lessons. There was one fellow, though, who threatened her with a gardening tool he grabbed from our (then) garage. I did come pretty close to Dan Hedaya in Clueless mode, at that point. I don't think he was really going to use it, but I made it clear he shouldn't consider himself welcome in our house. Or county.

I'll echo that. I have no idea why pointing out that a dick move is a dick move would be an example of enforced political correctness. But then, I have always had the opinion that the whole complaint against "political correctness" as it has evolved is another form of censorship. Russel Brand gets to say what he wants (I fucked his granddaughter) but I don't get to say what I want (what a childish, dickish thing to say) because actually judging someone based on what they say has apparently become forbidden.

Is it or is it not considered "politically incorrect" to announce that you fucked somebody's granddaughter on the air. If it isn't, then why the outrage?

Am I mis-using the term "politically incorrect"?

I'm not trying to censor anyone.
