I was a barrista at one point. My only complaint about Starbucks is that their espresso machines are automatic, so every drink is identical. I would get no pleasure making an espresso shot, and I was good. But the lattes are fine and, as I said, in my price range.

My DSL package came today (I'm at work right now). First priority is to get a bio and electronic copy of a story off tomorrow for an anhology that is publishing me—Gay City, Vol. 3, on sale in June. I'm hoping to have a Kick Ass review in the next couple of days. I've been writing sentences in my head, if that means anything.

Earl should write one, too. I like his reviews.

Kick-Ass is a very pleasant surprise. Although it's often very funny, it also gets very dark in places. (The ghost of Kitty Genovese is watching over the movie.) When Kick-Ass, Big Daddy and Hit Girl are in jeopardy, you feel it. You hope that they will survive (after all, Kick-Ass is the narrator and this isn't Sunset Boulevard or American Beauty, as Kick-Ass helpfully points out), but the question is what condition they will be in. The movie doesn't shy away from the physical dangers of playing costumed vigilante. The action scenes are very well done, especially those involving Hit Girl. You fear for her even as she is kicking ass.

The acting is generally pretty good, including Nicholas Cage's best performance in quite a while, as a cop turned masked vigilante who turns his young daughter into Hit Girl. Hit Girl, as played by Chloë Grace Moretz, is an astonishing creation.

The movie is rated R and earns it. This is not a suitable movie for kids, but is for adults and older teenagers.

(Note: Chloë Grace Moretz, who plays Hit Girl, is also slated to play Abby--formerly Eli-- in Let Me In, the American version of Let the Right One In. She was also Rachel the kid sister in (500) Days of Summer. She may be on her way to becoming a major star at the age of 13.)

Did you not see The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans? It would be hard to top that amazing performance (IMO the second-best of his career, after Leaving Las Vegas).

Roger Ebert went apoplectic about Kick-Ass, calling it morally reprehensible in its depiction of a young girl committing mayhem, no matter how cartoonish.

Btw, Cage spells it "Nicolas."

Okay, the best Cage performance I've seen in quite a while. I'll have to see Bad Lieutenant etc. some time to satisfy my Herzog fetish.

Ebert puzzles me a lot. Especially this time. This is one time an R rating serves a purpose (for violence and language more than sex). It's really more for adults and older kids, and the older kids will be identifying more with Kick-Ass, who isn't really an advertisement for becoming a superhero.

If you have to move on without me, don't let me tie things up. I resumed watching Blood Simple last night and fell asleep. Will try to wrap it up tonight.

Whether one agrees with Ebert or not - I have no opinion not having seen the movie, his review is both effective and affecting. I like reviews that make me think and feel. If nothing else, it's certainly worth a read.

I'm glad you liked KICK Ass also ,Syd.. No matter what , it was a all around entertaining movie to watch. Yeah, I wonder how Hit Girl is going to turn out (the actress) She was my personal favorite..I don't know why R. Ebert is griping, it's definitely not a kids movie.

Ebert was griping about what I was griping about in the Scarface School Play video. Children being used as part of a post-modern ironic joke is IMO not funny, relevant, or genuinely satirical. I haven't seen Kick-Ass (I may wind up loving it) but that's what Ebert's point is.
