If I were rating these movies, Up in the Air would get three stars, Public Enemies two, and Heat one.

My four-star reviews of the year are A Serious Man, The Hurt Locker, Avatar, 35 Shots of Rum, (500) Days of Summer, A Prophet, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Big Fan, Sita Sings the Blues, Goodbye Solo, and World's Greatest Dad.

Three-and-a-half: District 9, Funny People, The Informant!, Inglourious Basterds, and I Love You, Man.

Three: Crazy Heart, Up, Up in the Air.

I have a similar opinion of Up In the Air. I liked it and do think that it was very well done, but I won't rate it anymore than somewhere between good and very good.

This is not a similar opinion to Marc's. "Somewhere between good and very good (the same reaction as mine, btw) is not 'thumb down in the air.'"

No, it was a similar opinion to yours, not Marc's. That was how I meant it.

I was going by a five star rating system.

Billy, I haven't seen one of your 4 star movies. Mostly because they have never been here.

No such excuse for not seeing Sita Sings the Blues! It's EVERYWHERE!

Get around to it! Marta will love it too, I think.

I also liked Public Enemies, but I can see why someone could dislike it. Johnny Depp operates his John Dillinger character within a narrow alleyway of emotions, and it's easy to mistake this very un-Depp role as vacant. It isn't, it's quite intense actually, but if you don't see that quality then the whole film is running on empty.

I said much the same thing after first seeing, Public Enemies. I actually said that I thought Depp's performance would be ignored come award season. Yet, it was one of his more subtle performances. And I thought very effective. And yes, Lorne, it was indeed intense.

Geez.. I've only seen the first three of your 4-star films. Much catching up to do.

Nothing I saw in 2009 gets my 4-star rating. Closest at three-and-three-quarter stars: District 9, The Hurt Locker, Tetro, Inglourious Basterds.

Three-and-a-half stars: The Informant (what happened to all the buzz surrounding that fine film?), Funny People, Crazy Heart, The Watchmen

Three stars: Up In The Air, Star Trek, Up, Sin Nombre, The Hangover

Just below that: A Single Man, A Serious Man, The Last Station, Public Enemies

On the basis of both of your responses, I guess I'm going to have to watch a movie I have no interest in. I need to know what I'm missing.

Joe, if you're going to see it, just be warned: the photography which was stunning on the big screen doesn't translate well. I think it has something to do with the new digital film stock but I'm not sure.

That kinda sucks, but okay. I wonder if watching on an HDTV will help?

Maybe. I hope so. It also depends on how large your screen is. Give it a try, Joe. I'd be curious to know if it works or not.
