Public Enemies is the worst of the 2009 films that I didn't care about, just above the films that I actively disliked. What was the point of making PE?

It was very good, and I'm not a Mann fan.

Gromit - What's the point of making any film? Explaining the point of a movie is like explaining the punch line of a joke. You either get it or you don't.

But I should add, you're not alone. I think Gary, Marc and I were the only ones here that liked it. If I missed someone, I apologize.

What was the impetus behind making the film?
What did they hope to express/accomplish?
Who was passionate about making it and why?
I couldn't tell.

Here, Gromit. Maybe this will help answer your questions. I hope.

Watched Polanski's Bitter Moon for the first time in a very long time. What a twisted, dark and very funny film. A terrific companion piece to The Tenant.

I'll be interested to read a truly negative response to this very overhyped but IMO totally professional and exceedingly well-made movie.

I have a similar opinion of Up In the Air. I liked it and do think that it was very well done, but I won't rate it anymore than somewhere between good and very good.

I also liked Public Enemies, but I can see why someone could dislike it. Johnny Depp operates his John Dillinger character within a narrow alleyway of emotions, and it's easy to mistake this very un-Depp role as vacant. It isn't, it's quite intense actually, but if you don't see that quality then the whole film is running on empty.

Gary - I liked Up In The Air more than you did, but with both of these films I think it all comes down to how in-synch you are with the central character. I liked Depp - even though I can't relate to Dillinger - and loved the portrayal of the era in Public Enemies, and I really empathized with Clooney's mid-life angst in Pubic Enemies, otherwise known as Up In The Air.

I'd probably give UITA three and a half, maybe four stars. I'd give Public Enemies four and a half. UITA got so many more accolades than PE, that it puzzles me. I think Heat was more hyped than PE and Heat was just lame and by the same director. I don't know how Mann did it, but the last scene in Heat was such drawn out schmaltz and pretty well unwatchable and the last scene in Public Enemies was spare and powerful.

I just can't see Johnny Depp as Dillinger.

This is not a similar opinion to Marc's. "Somewhere between good and very good (the same reaction as mine, btw) is not 'thumb down in the air.'"
