Hard to Kill was Seagall's career peak IMO. Under Siege and Above the Law are better films but less successful "flicks," if you get my drift.
Seagall himself is another story, a genuine asshole from all accounts. He damaged the already questionable image of the male ponytail forever. |

I should have gone to bed by now, but I was watching The Exterminating Angel and I just couldn't.
It's a movie that takes a single premise--a group of guests arrive at a dinner party and find themselves unable to leave the salon--and goes logically from there. I found it surprisingly straightforward for Buñuel, only occasionally funny, but mostly following the inevitable degradation of people in this civilization. I admired it more than loved it--once Buñuel's established the premise, it tends to move rather slowly--but it was really good to see what he could do when he stayed focused. Of course, now I'm hungry. |

| I just watched Nine and, although not a musical lover and never having seen the musical, am mystified by all the hatin' this film's receiving. Sure it's not the greatest, best of, or whatever film of any year, but come on. I'm so against the critical masses train these days, we're running on opposite tracks. |

I wouldn't say Nine gave me joy, but it did hold my attention and it didn't make me want to holler and scream and throw things at the screen. I think there was some reason other than artistic merit that made the consensus of opinions on the negative. But that's Show Biz, baby.
A Serious Man? Tried 3 times now to finish it and it put me to sleep each time. Perhaps you have to be Jewish and "in the know" to get the humor. For whatever reason I wasn't getting it. However, as I own the screener, I'm not about to ditch it until I can see it till the end. |

Just catching up with this. Yes, Mum has asked me to take her to see Shutter Island. But I'd be up for seeing something. I think the last movie we caught together was Nine which was quite a while ago. The Last Station is at the River Oaks. 2001 is the Midnight show there this weekend and if I take about five hits of speed I might be able to stay up that late. |

I thought that it rose above the level of "just OK" only a few times. Overall I wouldn't recommend it, but I didn't come away hating it or anything like that. I was surprised that my favorite number was the one done by Kate Hudson. Before then I had no idea she could sing.
Also, I have to admit that Guido's conversation with the Cardinal provided me with one of my biggest laughs of last year:
Guido: "Cardinal, I try to be a good Catholic."
Cardinal: "Try harder."
But maybe one has to grow up Catholic to appreciate it. I dunno.
My fellow lapsed Catholic Joe and I saw it together and then walked to an Italian restaurant right around the corner. I had a silly time saying "Be Italian!" every five minutes and if the place hadn't been so noisy that would have been even more embarrassing than it actually was. |
