Tetro has been totally overlooked.........and it's my favorite film of the year.

So I understand, from colleauges and your and Lorne's enconiums -- it sadly played when The Year From The Planet Hell was at its most Hellish. Re: the proposed double-bill screening, will certainly inqure of the Baroque Violinist, although given that his insane schedule -- concertizing, freelance coaching and pick-up gigs, regular professorial duties and rabid cinemaphilia -- makes my beleaguered itinerary languid by comparison, anybody's guess exactly when.

How long has the Directors Guild been giving awards?
The first actual award from the DGA was in 1938, D.W. Griffith received an Honorary Life Member citation. The yearly honors to a film director date back to 1948's non-calendar year award presented in 1949 to Joseph L. Mankiewicz for A Letter to Three Wives, Robert Rossen taking the '49 honors for All The King's Men.

The Hurt Locker is a great exploration of men at war (in some respects, it reminded me a of the excellent BBC mini-series Occupation). However, I had one or two problems with some technical details that made it difficult for me to totally settle into the film.

Bomb disposal squads do a difficult job that requires a special type of courage. I suspect that few other combat roles require its soldiers to calmly and repeatedly put themselves in such danger. Their’s might not be a glamorous role (if I can use that term in this context) but the bravery required is manifest. As such, I was disappointed that Karen Bigelow felt the need to turn the EOD squad into action heroes, regularly taking on insurgents single-handedly. I felt it an unnecessary Hollywoodisation. Though trained soldiers, an EOD squad are specialists who will usually go abouttheir work under the protection of more regular combat troops. In one, for me, particularly unconvincing scene, the squad, who had no business being out and about on their own, took on and defeated a number of snipers despite being deserted by a number of battle hardened contractors.

This quibble aside, I would not begrudge this film or its director the Oscar.

I may have mentioned this before, but in '79, BBCTV produced an excellent series called Danger UXB, with Anthony Andrews ("Brideshead Revisited") as a young, hastily trained unexploded bomb - "UXB" - officer during the London blitz.

IMO, it surpassed the Oscar-worthy Hurt Locker for that specialized tension, because it gave you much more tech info on the design of these nasty things, and it took more time to detail the several disposal events.

Thanks Inla.

I continue to scratch me head over the attention given to Avatar. Certainly entertaining and great to watch, and I dug the 3-D glasses, but really now... Best Picture? It's a fuckin' kid's story.

This is one of the very few times that I don't have any big disagreement about the Academy's nominations. Mind you it is probably the year I have seen far fewer of the films up for nomination. That's why I really can't participate in the Blanche voting. I'm not happy with that, but that's the way it is.

For the second half of Avatar, the story is on auto-pilot. Cliches fly around and crash into each other.
I couldn't believe that it actually comes down to the usual championship wrestling formula of hero v. villain, one-on-one, with stunning reversals ... complete with ultra-dumb quips exchanged. Almost the worst of pop culture, where the extreme investment of money meant that they tried to appeal to as broad an audience as possible while making everything as familiar as possible, seemingly afraid that taking chances and creativity would hurt financial returns.

I'm surprised that Mary & Max was left off.
Glad to see Matter of Loaf and Death in the short ani mix.
Surprised Men & Goats & Staring was rebuffed, and The Informant was shut out.
And I haven't seen Where the Wild Things Are, but figured it would get some sort of nomination.

I'm planning to skip Invictus (heard some cornball lines from Freeman while in a Dvd shop), Julie & Julia, and Nine. Are any of these essential?

The only serious disagreement I have is that Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man) was left off the Best Actor list. He gives one of the best performances of the year.

Considering the plethora of acclaimed, accomplished, just-off-the-radar actors -- Nicky Cage, Ben Foster, Matt Damon in Informant!, Viggo! in The Road, to name but four -- amid the mix in 2009, Michael Stuhlbarg was never more than a long shot for an Oscar nod, at best, though he did give an excellent performance.

Am rather wistful over the Where the Wild Things Are shut-out, the (500) Days of Summer script snub, the inevitable absences of Alec Baldwin/Anthony Mackie/Jeff Bridges (for Goats) supporting nods, Julianne Moore/Samantha Morton, Single Man and Julie & Julia adapted screenplays, Ann Roth's J&J costumes, Sin Nombre and The Bridges of Agnes. Pleasantly surprised at the Messenger screenplay nod, though. Biggest Buzz/reax amid the press corps this morning: The Blind Side's Best Picture and Maggie G's Crazy Heart supporting nods. Also In the Loop for screenplay, though it got fewer gasps/cheers in the room.

On Avatar, have previously commented, and will still my tongue, except to note am more aligned with the Lorne/gromit POV than with Mr. Dolores, tee-hee.

The only real surprises for me in the major categories are "In the Loop" for adapted screenplay, Maggie Gyllenhaal for supporting actress and the absence of Anthony Mackie for supporting actor. I was surprised not to see District 9 and Where the Wild Things Are absent in some of the techical categories where I was expecting them. such as costume design for Where the Wild Things Are.

I'm disappointed but not surprised Goodbye Solo and Moon didn't pick up any nominations. I was hoping Anvil! The Story of Anvil might pick up a documentary nod.

I agree with all the Razzies except for G I Joe. Shouldn't even be close to getting on the list. Did I see a different movie?
