The comparisons between Anvil and Spinal Tap are off-base. Two entirely different movies. Both feature a longhair rock band and that's about it.

The first part of Anvil features a disastrous tour arranged by the girlfriend of one of the members, during which things go from bad to worse, culminating with them appearing at a "Monster Rock Show" in Transylvania. It have tunnel scenes leading them to the stage. At one point the lead singer yells, "Hey, there Toronto!" We're also told how popular Anvil is in Japan. (With their luck, about as popular as in Transylvania.) No resemblance?

I suspect, though, any movie with a long-time almost successful band on a disastrous tour will remind me of Spinal Tap. The members of Anvil seem to be really nice and pretty talented guys who have spent thirty years devoting themselves to their art. I like their music better than many of the famous bands they influenced. (They also have boneheaded lyrics, including one song that seems to consist of the number six. I guess it's their song 666.)

I did stop at one point to check on Amazon.com to make sure the band actually exists. Yep, there are a bunch of their albums for sale, some at typically exorbitant prices.

He was talking about me, I'm sure.

It doesn't help that the drummer of Anvil is named Robb Reiner.

Edit: and CT Tsangarides' equipment has an input level dial that goes to 11.

Edit2: Finished the movie. Enjoyed it immensely. I don't think they ever did play a complete Anvil song, unless it was "Metal for Metal" toward the end.

Watched (500) Days of Summer a second time, and boy, does it hold up. This is one of the very best movies of 2009, and possibly the best romantic comedy of the decade. Yep. Can't think of another one--except possibly Definitely, Maybe--that comes close.

DDOS (get it? D=500; ain't I clever?) is Annie Hall for the aughts and teens, and--dare I say it?--I like it better than its predecessor.

Whaaaat? For that heresy, I'd horse whip you, if I had a horse.

You'd probably have to get in line. But Annie Hall, charming and quirky though it obviously be, was never my favorite Woody Allen (that would be Manhattan) or even in my top five (that would include Husbands and Wives, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Broadway Danny Rose, and Zelig).

Annie Hall is my wife's favorite movie, period. But we manage to live with this.

Have to add, however, that Diane Keaton in AH is a lot closer to my dream girl than Zooey Deschanel in DDOS. Deschanel has a few off-putting (to me) quirks. Keaton is very similar to my wife.

Really?! You are one lucky guy, you are.

Have to admit 500 days didn't rock my world. I wish I could think of a reason.

From which to glean the large sack of horse manure for me to follow in line with, at the ready. Heresy, indeed.

500 Days Of Summer is worth watching again just for the musical number.

Woohoo, hoorah, hopla.

It sent me, somewhere solidly in the upper tier of 2009 Movies inla Loved, and it certainly holds up to second viewings. Am just not sure it's going to be as definitively representative of its generation 30 years hence as Annie Hall still is of its generation, quirks and all. Time will tell.

It's on my list, Marc. And I think I really ought to see 500 Days again. I think I didn't give it its due the first time around.

Though "loathe" is far too strong a word for my reaction, I'm more in ehle's camp than Marc's.
