Is anyone or everyone aware that Sandra Bullock has become the first woman in cinema history ever to be the sole over-the-title female star in a movie which has grossed $200 million? She has, the movie is The Blind Side, and she becomes a front-running Oscar favorite as a result.
I hear she's a real nice gal, too. |

| Current Racso Buzz has Mr. Bridges ahead of Mr. Clooney, Ms. Bullock neck-and-neck with Ms. Streep and rapidly gaining ground, Mo'Nique still out front, both Up in the Air wommyn barely nipping at her heels, nobody having the remotest shot at upsetting Christoph Waltz, Ms. Bigelow still The Director (Directress?) To Beat, and Anybody's Guess for Best Picture, since 10 films require less of a plurality for something to win. Just saying -- Tom O'Neil thinks it will be Basterds, Pete Hammond thinks it will be Avatar, Sasha Stone thinks it will be a more traditionally "Oscar" picture. Whereas I think it's going to be even more of zoo than it already is. The Globules should be a hoot this year. Kewl. |

And, right on cue, Mrs. Gummer (for both J&J and Mr. Fox) and Mr. Bridges were the impending winners of the first round of National Society of Film Critics balloting -- until proxies dropped out, with final ballots awarding the prizes to Yolande Moreau and Jeremy Renner. Herr Waltz (tying with Paul Schneider of Bright Star, according to the winner's rundown, though that could be a typo -- story indicates Col. Landa beat out Woody H. in Messenger) and Mme. Mo'Nique (edging out Li'l Kendrick) continue their awards rack-up, and...
...wait for it...
The Hurt Locker and Ms. Bigelow maintaining the criticality-driven top honors.
L.A. Times: Gold Derby: Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges ALMOST won National Society of Film Critics Awards
Some intriguing near-placers include Inglourious Basterds, Olivier Assayas and Summer Hours (which won ForLang), Mad Nicky for Bad Lieutenant , Abbie Cornish for Bright Star, Samantha Morton for The Messenger, Christian McKay for Me and Orson Welles, Coraline for Production Design and Anvil! in Docu. Let the games begin. |

The previous NSoFC post was indeed factually challenged -- Herr Waltz won Supphose Actor all by himself. willybeeds will no doubt be happy that A Serious Man took another orig-screenplay win. Me, am thrilled that the Agnes Varda docu took docu and that they honored the restorers of The Red Shoes (breathtaking beyond belief)

I've been busy lately and have been ignoring Third Eye too much. Sorry, all.
Anyways, in the past 9 days I've seen Nine (liked 2 or 3 of the numbers, but overall very "eh"), Up in the Air (liked it very much), Sherlock Holmes (mixed feelings) and today I took Mum to see The Young Victoria (well done on the political side, but lacked romantic sizzle). I'll try to post more detailed reviews during this week.
{Sidenote: It was kinda funny to see Mark Strong as the villain in Sherlock Holmes on Saturday night, and then 14 hours later see him again playing another despicable sort in The Young Victoria. By the time 2:00PM today came, I wanted to thrash the bounder.}
I also need to get in my Best of Decade list and start thinking about Blanche stuff.
So many pics to see. So much to do. As a wise man once said, "It's always like this." |

| Just saw (500) Days of Summer and agree that the ending was terrif. So was the rest of the movie, save for a somewhat too-twee narration. Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel were wonderful. |

Official numbers show Avatar's projected North American cume, after only 17 days in release from 20th Century Fox, will be $352.1 million. And with an international cume of $670.2 million, its worldwide box office figure should be $1.02 billion coming out of this weekend.
Could Avatar reach $2 billion? I think it has a chance.
I don't think anyone would question Cameron's ability make money on this film. It's big screen buzz will keep people coming back. Even with my reservations on the overall plot, I'd like to see it in IMAX 3D before it leaves theaters (which I'm sure will not be anytime soon). |

| Gordon-Levitt hasn't impressed me on film. But on television I was amazed that, after he grew beyond his "kid" stage on Third Rock, he didn't become a drag on the show the way so many kids do when they get older. He displayed real comic skills and was easily the equal to anyone on the show (quite a compliment to his talent). |
