Did you mean A Serious Man? I would obviously think it was a typo for A Single Man except that you have listed that one later as one you're going to see. These titles are simply, seriously, a singular problem.
Not really surprised about the reaction to Nine. The trailer turned me completely off, and anyone around here knows I adored Chicago, so I wanted to like it.
Of course, am over the moon about the LA Critics choosing a great movie and a great director. The LA people almost always do better than NYC on these awards, though. |

Inla, thanks once again for you entertaining, funny, and most of all, informative postings.

Billy, maybe Musical previews are more accurate than non-musical previews. When I saw the preview for Rent, I was sure that it would be a bomb. It was one of those rare times that I had a very hard time sitting through a preview. I'd never seen Rent or was even familiar with the music. But after I read your comments about it, it sounded as bad as the movie. Oh sooooo precious.
It's no La Boheme. |

marantzo, how kind of you, as ever, for me it's recreational, and you're very welcome.

These titles are simply, seriously, a singular problem. Yes, the impending screener is the Bros. Coen's Jewish brainiac comedy, am seeing Tom Ford's Isherwood adaptation later this month. Editing accordingly. It is a bit of a muddle, those titles. Don't get me started on Up, Up in the Air, Nine, 9, District 9. Thanks goodness there's not titles with variants of Hurt or Locker , Julie or Julia, Summer or Wild Things in the year's film mix. It would give me dyspepsia.

This year was reportedly a (relatively) smoother trek to reaching conclusions, as opposed to last year, when WALL-E was the only film that could hold its plurality amid many off-the-beaten-path advocates and much Oscar-bait resistance, and it took 'em a while to achieve consensus.
Edited because it's just my bent to rewrite |

There are a couple of recent films named Julia, one with Tilda Swinton, one without. |

Well, the NY Film Critics redeemed themselves by also choosing The Hurt Locker as best movie of 2009, rather than what I predicted from them, Up in the Air. But Clooney did grab the Best Actor slot. Streep got Best Actress, IMO undeservedly, but I'm not a Streepian by nature.
Unfortunately, A Serious Man and Michael Stuhlbarg are getting shut out in the cold.)
However, Clooney, Mo'Nique (supporting actress) and Chrisoph Waltz (supporting actor) are gonna be impossible to beat for the Oscar. Streep has a lot of competition from Carey Mulligan, Gaboury Sidibe, and...wait for it...Sandra Bullock. |

She's never been more genuinely loved in Screenland than now. Just saying.
billyweeds wrote: Unfortunately, A Serious Man and Michael Stuhlbarg are getting shut out in the cold.) There are ten, count 'em, ten slots in the Racso slate, and the Bros. Coen are much-admired in Tooncestown, so the film could still show up. However, Mr. Stulhberg is unlikely to crack the best actor slate.
billyweeds wrote: However, Clooney, Mo'Nique (supporting actress) and Chrisoph Waltz (supporting actor) are gonna be impossible to beat for the Oscar. Likely eventual winners all, but don't count your Oscars yet. Both Bridges and Firth have extremely strong word of mouth as Best Actor at this moment in time, in some quarters outdoing Clooney, the Chanel of Heartthrobs (who obviously has the advantage of multiple well-received films and the NY Crix prize). And meanwhile Crazy Heart is gathering the kind of underdog steam that Fox Searchlight so fruitfully exploited with Slumdog last year. Christopher Plummer is all but a mortal lock for a supphose nod for Last Station (weighing his voice turn in Up and about-to-be-released Dr. Parnassus turns intothe mix), ditto Dame Helen -- both performances are spoken of in hushed, awestruck tones at even the most raucous Industry events, There's a chance that Mrs. Gummer will get two nominations, It's Complicated for Best Actress, Julie & Julia for Best Supphose, which could completely change the stakes. Best Supphose Actor is a literal buffet of threats to Waltz, besides Plummer, from Tucci in Lovely Bones (he's got current Buzz galore) to Molina in An Education, to either leading man in Complicated, to Hoody Warrelson in Messenger, ad infinitum. Ditto the wommyn, with Li'l Kendrick and La Farmiga both being touted for a slot, Maggie G. for Crazy, half the cast of Nine at Harvey Weinstein's Machiavellian disposal, ad infinitum again.

If Mrs. Gummer gets lead actress nodded for the Nancy Meyer romcom, one of the other ladies will take the Bald Gold Man with the Sword, barring a Touch of Class-esque logjam. If nominated for lead actress for Julie & Julia, she's The One to Beat, and a Genuine Threat to Mo'Nique in supphose if nominated there (which isn't out of the realms of lunatic possibility). The SAGGY noms will be the most telling for performance/majority of AMPAS member's bent, as they generally are. And, anyway, tt isn't ever really subject to more than speculation 'till Dawn of the Dead (i.e., Nomination Morning), and --once more with feeling -- This Year Is Unlike Any Other Oscar Year Since 1939 And Even Then.
As evidenced by the Broadcast Film Critics nods, which include Inglourious Basterds, Nine, A Serious Man, Jeremy Renner, Emily Blunt, Saoirse Ronan and Christian McWelles amid many of the previously discussed:
LAT: 'Inglourious Basterds' and 'Nine' receive Critics Choice nominations |

Having seen Up in the Air and Precious, I would give the Oscar to Farmiga for acting skill plus charm. Mo'Nique and Anna Kendrick are both fantastic, and any of the three would be a worthy winner. But Farmiga is luscious to boot. She's something else. |

So sorry. Here's a different version of the same sentiment.

Chrisoph Waltz was brilliant. I would pin my hopes on him for the win. |

marantzo, it was Homer Simpson doing "The Scream."
chillywilly wrote: Chrisoph Waltz was brilliant. I would pin my hopes on him for the win. He's the front-runner, criticality-speaking for sure. Am just trying to exercise caution until Nomination Morning makes it a fait accompli. As of a week ago today, for instance, one colleague had over 30 screeners she had to complete perusal of before Sunday's LA film crix balloting. Now, multiply that by however many peeps participate in that um, film society, and all the production companies that think they might have a shot at one of the extra 5 slots, not to mention the various indy/art-house films that take advantage of the situation to get copies of their films in Aclademites hands. It's astonishing, actually. |
