The source material are Ai Mi's Internet-published novel "Shan Zha Shu Zhi Lian" - or "The Love of the Hawthorn Tree" - and Yan Geling's "Jin Ling Shi San Chai" or "The 13 Women of Nanjing," Pang said.
Ai's book is about the romance between a young woman and a young man from different class backgrounds during China's ultra-leftist 1966-1976 Cultural Revolution, when families from wealthy and politically incorrect backgrounds were persecuted. Yan's novel is about 13 sex workers who volunteered to replace university students as escorts for invading Japanese soldiers in 1937. |

I'd go see those, two (although with an eye out for overt political messages in two very messy subjects). |

Stayed up last night to catch the replay of The Oprah's program with various Nine principals. Though La Winfrey's, um, interviews were mainly gushy/rah-rah, the clips were fairly spectacular. Having found Chicago worthy without being either perfect or miraculous, have a gut suspicion that here Mr. Marshall's talent and ambitions have not only dovetailed with but vaulted beyond the source material. La Belle Marion and La Belle Penélope came off wonderfully in their snippets, as did La Belle Nicole, who sings "Unusual Way" a third lower (which she most charmingly self-deprecated over) -- her footage looks amazing for someone who started shooting scant weeks after giving birth in their early 40s. Daniel Day-Lewisohn as Guido seems to have the proper smolder and Goldie Hawn Jr. also seemed of a piece with the re-conception. Got some insights on the changes, which include SPOILERS a new song for Luisa at the end to replace "Be On Your Own," a different title number for La Immortal Sophia to sing to Guido as Mama Contini (her clip waltzing with him took my breath away -- am sure there's a portrait of her somewhere looking like Joan Rivers or sump'n); Stephanie Necrophorus (Ms. Hudson) is no longer a movie critic but a Vogue correspondent who does a major Hullaballoo-esque go-go number; Liliane LaFleur (Dame Judi in Linda Hunt bangs) is no longer Guido's producer but his costume designer. And, again, just a few seconds of Fergie's Seraghina doing "Be Italian" was spine-tingling. Judging by the excerpts, Mr. Marshall's movie concept operates on a post-Baz Lurhmann, potentially dazzling stylistic split twixt blazing color and Fellini-esque black-and-white. It moored up my lingering hope that it will be Something Truly Special.

| Caught a new trailer, and it just still looks pretty cheesy to me. There's another new song that sounds terrible. I'm hoping it turns out better than I'm expecting at the moment. |

Am aching to see Precious, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, and The Blind Side.
I'm not a Sandra Bullock fan, but the trailers for The Blind Side show her to be giving a wonderful performance as a rich Southern lady who takes a homeless youth under her wing and helps him get the self-confidence he needs to become a winner. It's a true story, but fuzzy liberal bleeding hearts are already calling it racist because the benefactor is white and the recipient of the largesse is black. Repeat, it's a true story. I hate bleeding heart liberals almost as much as I hate right-wingers.
BL: POCNO has a terrible title but apparently an almost career high for Nicolas Cage and a great directorial job by Werner Herzog. It's at the top of my list.
Precious sounds like the grittier, less entertaining version of The Blind Side, the one fuzzy liberals can take to their hearts. |

I am a Sandra Bullock fan and The Blind Side is the one I'd pick to go to. Precious sounds way to bleak for my entertainment schedule and the New Orleans movie, I haven't made a judgment on yet. Which reminds me; I have to look up the movie schedule here this week. |

I've got Precious (original title: Push) on reserve at the library. Our local news reviewer talked about all three of those films you mentioned, billy, and gave Precious the highest rating. He said it's the most compelling movie you will ever only want to see once. He raved about it. He said The Blind Side is good but not great, stating there is a lot of emotional manipulation in it, but liked it nonetheless. I'm interested in both.
His reviews from today are found here and he says that while Precious is bleak, it is compelling. I like that he mentions one of the film's strengths is NOT fading to black when the tough scenes are shown. That takes courage in film making. |

Despite the necessity of being extremely judicious in timing Precious viewing, being exceptionally fragile just now, it's locked on the must-see list.

feels likely accurate (says the plot-necessitated separation of Cullen and Swan for much of the fillum dulls its guilty-pleasure oomph), I had uncomplicated fun at Bite Me, without taking it remotely as seriously as the world's teenage-girl-in fact/at heart/of attitude population did. Billy......you can correct my spelling anytime. Every year it's getting worse. It must be connected with the part of my brain that is fading away.....so sad.
I read all 4 of the Twilight books. #2, New Moon I liked the least because there wasn't enought Edward. |
