I had no idea there was already buzz.

Joe, I read that Nine could garner a number of nominations. It's been screened here twice, though I have no idea what the outcome was.

And it opens here on December 18th. Perhaps it's in limited release.

I wonder if it will follow the same release pattern as Chicago, where they opened in a few key cities, let the buzz grow, and only then released it nationwide? If so, we should get it here the same time you do, because Houston was included in the limited release for Chicago as well.

Marj,

Did you read about the previews, or is it just the buzz around town? I'd like to check out anything I could about it on the internet.

I think a lot of the buzz revolves around the jam-packed cast - with the return of Sophia Loren to the big screen alongside so many award-winning/-nominated actresses. As well, a Rob Marshall musical will be reminiscent of Chicago so I believe they're banking on that association too.

IMdB has it at a Christmas Day release - but I'd bet NYC gets it early in limited release. Oh well, I can wait a week more...

This has to be taken with a huge grain of salt, coming as it does from the man who after seven years still cannot accept the fact that the Best Picture-winning and audience-pleasing Chicago is a success. (He proclaimed it a box-office flop and an artistic disaster after the first week of release; that's his story and he's sticking to it.)

Speaking of Nine as a Best Picture nomination, this seems even more credible now that there are ten nominations coming in that category. Which reminds me, should we revise our Blanche nomination list accordingly?

...or he could just be buzzin'.

Probably not, but not impossible.

Too few voters to do that successfully, I think.

Joe,

I just read what IMDb.com had to say. Go there and read their news desk and message boards all under the title: Nine.

Btw, when a film opens in limited release, it opens on one date in select cities and then opens "wide" in the rest. Maybe Chicago rolled out as you said--I wouldn't remember, but that's not normally the case. Nine is opening on the 18th in limited release and then on the 25th in wide release.

Also, try googling Nine. You'll get a lot of wrong responses but there maybe more news than what you'll find on IMDB.

One of the secrets to better search engine results is to put your search terms in quotation marks. If you want Nine, you'll get tons of hits with the word in it, but if you're looking for only Nine, put it in as "Nine" and it'll narrow it down (works like that for any search - if you want health care reform put it into quotation marks and you won't get every hit with the individual words across the 'net).

That being said, my search was definitely more narrowed than a search without quotes, but the movie - and the play - were touted as "Nine - The Musical". That'll get you the best results.

A while back, Stephen King did a piece for EW about the difference between "buzz" and "hype" (the former being the genuine article, the latter being much ado about very little). It was a brilliantly written piece and opened my eyes about the two words which shouldn't be used interchangeably. I believe there's buzz about Nine; they're expecting this to replicate the success of Chicago. Just my opinion.

Thanks, Lissa.

Marj,

Mirimax was really scared about Chicago (remember that the ads never called it a musical) and they wanted to build a solid box office in urban areas before opening it wide. The hope was that positive word-of-mouth would override the percieved box office poison movie musicals were considered to be.

I like what you said earlier, Joe, about how you were watching a classic movie in its first run. I got to see it on PPV when it first got released, and watched it over and over again till I finally bought the DVD. It remains a favorite. I'd been deeply familiar with the soundtrack, having bought it after the musical won a Tony and the award show featured Bebe Neuwirth in the role of Velma as she played it on Broadway. I knew then that I had to get to know the songs, and I did - even before the movie was filmed. But I want to see Nine in its big-screen glory so I can feel the same way you did about Chicago. And yes, that does mean I am optimistic about it!
